Hub nut socket for ex Army truck

What wire did you use to TIG weld the nut onto the flat bar?

I’ve made a few pullers and other bits and pieces, and every now and then, the nut cracks off or flat bar really bends when you put a ½” impact gun on it.

I’d probably add another pass to those welds, put a bit more meat into the throat.

Hi Brad I'm sure its 312 filler rod on the welds. Thanks for the advice on beefing it up, I'm hoping it wont be mega tight as they are taper roller bearings, Ill get some pics over Christmas when we get it in bits.

Hi, It maybe, it depends how they're set up. They could have a spacer between the bearings which is shimmed up to give the correct end float, which is done dry, then pulled down and packed with grease. The nut is then done up with enough 'authority' to align the locking bolt to be inserted, it looks like a choice of two slots at 90 degrees in the axle tube and a hole in each flat of the nut. Hence my comment about the tool needing a support going into the axle tube.

I'm not trying to put you off, just a forewarning of what you could expect to find.

Here's a mate of mine, he used to take these to bits using an Oxy Acetylene spanner, Every now and again a bullet would wizz past him as they used to get lost in nooks and crannies, The cutter found them though!!

Thanks for the advice Colin I’ll let you know what we find. I am guessing it is set up as you say as the book says ideal end float is between 3 and 8 thou. Thanks again

You still got the forging dies for the tank gun barrels, or have they been weighed in for scrap since we no longer spend money on armed forces...?

Sorry, I've no idea, I don't work in the forge, The barrel treatment plant is still on Hawk street but i'm pretty sure it's not used any more, Don't think the massive ones have been made in decades!

The ones I recall were brought (probably the neck end of twenty years ago) from the old Royal Ordnance place at Nottingham (now a housing estate I believe)... 105 and 155mm I think, about 24 foot long?
It was the last place in England besides Forgemasters with the capability to hammer such big lumps, or so they told us.
