Just read another person on this forum ask yet again about selling B.O.C. /airproducts etc bottles, I have had a legit account for years, So Am i correct in thinking that all the bottles we see for sale somebody somewhere must be paying rental on them, Also what happens in the case of your garage being broken in to and bottles stolen, Do B.O.C. etc just write them off,

The bottles that are 'floating' have usually been lost/stolen and someone has had to pay for them, or someone is still paying hire for and needs to check their stocks!

I still dont know how much you would get stung for by BOC or AP for loosing one!

I've heard stories of people being charged between £250 - £375 for missing cylinders, depending on the size, a customer of mine had a helium balloon cylinder stolen from his car, said it cost him £125, but I'm not sure if that was BOC or not.

Small Banks: £3,472
Integra 10/20L: £291
180L Minitanks: £1,400

Integra 30L: £357
Pallet: £600

I wonder what these cylinders cost to make? When they originaly came up with the rental instead of selling scheme they were on a perpetual money making trip.when you think about people that have had an account for 20-30years the rental has certainly added up to a pretty penny.And what about the handling charge, even when you pick up the cyl's yourself.

I'm sure that a place i worked at had a visit from BOC and we had a bottle which we had but not rented they then added this to our rental agreement, so my understanding is that if I'm offered say 2 oxy bottles for free (boc ones) they are emptys I will have to pay rent on them. The bottles in question have been lying around for at least the last year.

If your cylinders are stolen one would.....A) Admit they had gone missing and forward the bill onto your insurance company B) Keep quiet and keep paying rental for cylinders you no longer have C) "Acquire" a cylinder in a similar fashion yourself and hope you don't get caught out by the bar-code system.

The truth is HP cylinders are a troublesome investment with all the test regulations/insurance. In practice, you don't really want to buy your own one because a legitimate filler would have to check proof of ownership and view a test certificate every time you refill. Further more, to get your own one filled you may have to wait around or return the next day.

Certain folk say that cylinders are just a rip off (true in some cases) however, if the cylinder companies could circulate their existing stock rather than having to purchase new ones to replace the orphaned ones it would work out cheaper for all concerned wouldn't it????

I would think that a large percentage of the "orphaned" cylinders are "Borrowed" from the bigger companies that most of the time do not even know they have gone missing and continue to pay rental, the legit cylinders in circulation decreases so the gas companies buy new ones to rent out, therefore even more bottles to rent. If people do realise their cylinders have been stolen then either the gas companies charge for a lost cylinder or the insurance company pays them, Either way gas company gets paid for the cylinder and buys new ones, In the process updating some of their stock with newer bottles at somebody elses expense.

An old friend of mine has his own gas supply
business in Darlington, and he's just quoted me
£65 + vat for a brand new 10L 95/5 argon mix
bottle which has a life of 5 years(£14.95/year).
I will just pay to re-fill it.
So how the hell do AP justify the bottle loss charges

Could you add him to the gas suppliers list - other members up there should be grateful to hear about him.

The big three suppliers aren't really orientated towards DIY users with their occasional refills so bottle rental is the big cost for us. The gas suppliers list is intended to promote independent suppliers who can better support the DIY guys.

Hi Gordon as far as I know its the same rate for everybody. I put him on the
gas suppliers list a few days ago. You could give him a ring it's FOX GAS
on 01325 308628 don't think he works weekends tho.
