Can’t find the link now, was probably on YouTube, very quick to fit too.
Yes, I read about the Fronius tig items, costly bits.
Same here, as soon as I get a new welder, I get a very heavy return cable and
Brass clamp, I keep the old one for times when another user will be welding,
for that exact reason, sparking on the clamp, better to avoid on a good clamp,
and no need for it at all.

I'm almost thinking to replace the clamp to prevent this kind of things , but I don't know I like the idea to have something from my friend who "helps me" from the sky , but on the other hand I want not to damage the clamp because is something that remember to me who isn't here with me anymore ...
Glad to hear it does good on the Aluminium.
Replace the person who tried to spark up on it, if they don’t know not to do this
then what else will the screw up further down the road.
I find it better to cut my losses before it begins to cost me with idiots.

You then decided that we were wrong about Fronius being good, because you saw some videos, and started telling us all how volts/amps/wire works on a MIG set (some of which was incorrect, by the way). I also did.not.say Fronius was bad, but that I couldn't find any video showing good results, I did though since, I actually know of and respect Fronius inverter tech.

I used primarily Fronius for about 4-5years.
Excellent machines. We laid runs on 1.2mm wall thickness window and door frame extrusions; barely ever a pinhole in sight.
Also ran fillets and butts on upto 20mm aluminium, never an issue. And that was me going in as an apprentice at the time; running more than capable ali mig welds within a couple of months!
Chuckling now that someone reckons fronius might not be any good based on a video somewhere..!

In the industry Fronius have got a good name. They are the market leader in welding sets in Europe.
The question of unique torches etc used to be a common topic in Lincoln meetings. The concencus of opinion was that Industrial customers wouldnt buy the set unless it had common torches.

Well if all you had to go on for demo purposes was video evidence, what would you have done.
Im shocked that they published a video with dodgy welds....its not like them. I know they have good welders as I know some of them. Someone will be in trouble for that.
The torch thing is an issue for some, but when you see the evidence of how well they perform,
then it’s a matter of cost, and cost may not matter too much either if you want the results of using a well designed torch can bring, everyone has to see it from their own perspective.

True, but on that note us one offs just don’t have buying power or the funds
of the bigger outfits, so we need to be as shrude as we can if we are to survive.
Ok a final update, I got my mig, and while trying it today I have decided to
send it packing.
@Mankul , it was the Origo C251.
I tried to like it, but the time to return it was running out,
I gave up trying to weld 5mm as it had no guts to do so, the welds started off
thin or thin and humped depending on how long you waited for the metal to warm
so the rest of the bead would look passable, so I gave in and decided to keep it
for lighter work.
That was until I had reason to weld a heavy piece of steel today,
and to my surprise, the rumbling started, the transformer was making
a vibrating noise, just like I have heard before on welders that gave up
the magistrate smoke.
This thing is nothing more than an excuse for a welder, my guess, transformer is
neither designed nor built well, as soon as the pressure to weld at high amps is
applied, this welder can’t perform, never reached the duty cycle, and never
will in my company.

on the one hand I can absolutely see why the torch thing would be an issue, especially if you’re a small business or a hobby welder, etc.
In my experience though, those torches are built to last. In 4 years, we only went had one torch out of 6 (3No dual machines with an alu torch and steel torch fitted to each one) give us any grief.
the rest were just standard wear and tear; contact tips, shrouds, liners, etc. And we were (i was..
) pretty hard wearing on them, too.

I've never heard good things about the origo C171/C201/C251's - and they look very cheaply made. The three-phase origo range just above those three models are made much more strongly, even if the wire feeds still look cheap.

This is what I had issue with
You're correct to a point, but the wire speed has more of an effect on amps than wire size... again, to a point. The wire size has an effect on the transfer mechanisms - a smaller wire will enter spray transfer at lower amps than a big wire. But the wire speed is DIRECTLY proportional to amps.You can use a give wire size for as fast as you can reasonably push it... ie. 20 metres/min is ridiculously fast, at that speed you'd be better dropping the speed and going up a wire size to achieve the same amperage. Same with the bottom end of the amperage... you reach a limit with the burn-off characteristics.
Voltage has very little to do with the amperage unless your machine is really cheap. It directly affects the arc length (even in short-circuit) which then gives you amps x volts = watts... ie more weld pool energy, giving a wider, flatter bead with a higher voltage.
This "sweet spot" - I agree, some machines just seem to work best at one or two settings and seem to perform poorly at anything else... but that's the machine and gas type, not the physics of wire/amperage. The two Kemppis at work, will perform well on 1mm and 1.2mm wire nearly all the way through the amperage range, with only a small window of globular transfer. Same with my Miller. The Lincoln struggles... and so did my old Cemont. They had definite "sweet spots" that outside of them, would spatter and sound rubbish no matter the voltage setting. That's my experience, anyway.
I think you understand it, just looks wrong the way you wrote it down.
