Used to be a regular visitor to this website following on from rebuilding my sons Mk 1 Astra GTE and a great site it still is , after completing his car the Nu Mig welder I had bought conked out ! Couldn’t be bothered to look into the problem with it so sold it as spares or repair, I then purchased a second hand Migatronic 221 which I have never used and recently having the need for a stick welder returned to this site for advice on which model etc. I have found myself becoming a regular visitor again and really surprised reading stories of
more recent cars rusting including Jaguars and I thought rust in cars was a thing of the past !

A guy I know has started a car rust proofing business and is doing very very well and is booked up for 3 months. He specialises in 4x4s, think he charges about £800 per vehicle. There’s certainly a market in the right location for rust proofing vehicles.

Anything but think most that come in are newer vehicles. If you’re going to keep it for a while it makes sense considering how much they cost.

Unbelievable in this day and age, I’ve seen plenty of Merc’s with rotted out rear wheel arches .

Mhhh, food for thought. My 530i [you might remember it ] is clear of serious corrosion as I was under it at the MOT three[ish] weeks ago - plus there were no advisories and the chap never even said to me "keep an eye on that".

Yes it's an old car but in great nick and I'm hoping it'll see my boots off, so it might just be worth arresting any surface rust progression. Do you think next time I'm down your way [probably next Spring now], he'd have a look and say if it's worthwhile?

Now we are doing more and more - not as many as we did in the 1990's - but month on month we are doing more and more!

Yeh, I used to make a comfortable living doing the welding for a couple of local garages , mini subframes, Austin 1100/1300 subframe mounting panels inner and outer sills etc but rustproofing improved and the work tailed off, think I’d better dust off the Mig !

No subframe welding now - anything that is part of the suspension - if it unbolts and can be replaced - cannot be welded for an MOT test.

However I'll probably be visiting my Brother in Edinburgh in the Spring so could arrange to drop in in passing for him just to have a look, then book for later if he thinks it'd be OK. If he was a mate I’m sure a discount code have been arranged. I actually bought his ex wife’s cottage and now she’s moved back to the village, she was telling me about the business at the weekend. I had wondered for a while if he was making a living and it was her that told me how well he is doing and looking at expanding to keep up with demand.

I think car manufacturers started using thinner gauge steel to make a lighter vehicle to improve fuel economy and also improved the rust proofing to suit but it seems to be going back to the old days.

I don't think it's the thickness of the steel. It's more likely to be poor paint adhesion.

I suspect the change to water based paints a few years ago has a lot to do with it.

I suspect the first few years of water based paints were very poor - I do think it has improved as time has moved on.

I also think - the move to "factory like accident repair centres" has contributed to cars starting to rust again.
