Screw in Tang?

Bought an MT3 collect set from a member on here, and it’s brilliant, both metric and imperial and will get me on my way hopefully. The Kerry has an MT3 tailstock, not sure about the Student, and unfortunately the Kerry Super8 MK2 is MT2 so may have to get a sleeve for that.

The set itself is tapped for M12, where a tang would be, so the question is, are such items available?

I seen screw in tangs on one of the model engineers suppliers, arc eurotrade or someone like that. They are available.

Yes, currently I do. Haven’t got a mill as yet, it’s on the cards for next year though all being well.

Just make one. M12 bolt and build up.the head with mig and file/grind to shape.
You have a lathe so why not turn one out of a piece of 20mm bar?

Unless the tang is needed to eject the taper just bung up the thread with a set screw and forget about it. If the tapers are good it shouldn’t be needed.

But...but..... where's the challenge in that sort of approach. There's some satisfaction for us amateurs/learners for what appears easily bought for small spends. For example I've yet to manage screw cutting on mine, but I have all the necessary wheel sizes needed, the chart showing which of these needed and even the Owners book with full instructions on 'how to', inc use of the back gear which I've already worked out. But once the 'projects' list shrinks in size [as if...] I will get to it and get it right.

Yes John but with the greatest of respect you have a surplus off free time.
Mine is very limited and spending 2 hours making a component I can buy for a fiver isn't a good use of it.

I used to waste time making small things in the workshop, gave up on that and buy things like milling parallels etc. Use the time to machine or fabricate things i am interested in.

Aye, spot on! I had overlooked that aspect - retirement does have many advantages too.

1. If I need something urgently I will make it no matter whether I could buy at a fraction of the cost of me making it.

2. If I need something but not urgently and it is very cheap to buy then that is what I will do.

3. If I need something and I can make it cheaper than I can buy then I will make it.

4. If I need something and although I can buy similar it is not exactly what I want, then I will make it even though it costs me more.

All above are because it is what I do for a living, if doing for a hobby then things would be different (and were different when I originally started machining) That was mainly because being able to make something was exciting and also a learning experience.

For clarity, point number 3 above I need to consider my time in this as well. If making it stops me doing paid work then it may not actually end up being cheaper to make it.

More rambling on point 3
An example is the T Nuts I made the last day. They are not the cheapest of things to buy, would have cost me £50 upwards and they took me about an hour to make and thus it was cheaper for me to make especially as the Chiron made them whilst I was working the manual lathe. If however I had been needing the Chiron to do another job but instead had made the T Nuts, then that would have likely cost me more and buying would have been more sensible.

For point 4 above.
I could have bought a trolley for my EWM Phoenix and I could have bought one a lot cheaper than the material cost for the one I made. The bought one however would not have the features/looks/functionality I wanted and thus making it was the sensible option even though it was more expensive.

Thanks folks, good to know they’re available, I’ll add one to the list along with an MT3-MT2 adapter and an MT2-MT3 adapter.

Could always make a draw bar to secure the MT3 taper in your lathe's mandrel, and use the 20mm thread as was intended.
