I found that my lift pumps were only lasting about 6 months - lots of brands tried. I wondered if it was because of the veg oil I was using. I don't have a problem now as I fitted a Facet Duralift as a lift pump and have blanked the side of the block where the mechanical pump went. The facet has been fitted about four five years now. Interestingly, if i forget to turn it on, I notice no difference whatsoever (even at 80 on the motorway!), I am sure that having it running puts less strain on the FIP though.

There is a big difference between fuels , the base fuel can be the same its the additive's ( which is added at the terminal) that make the difference, there are a few sites that go into great detail about the differences.
diesel is a bit more complicated due to the biofuel that's now has to be added, and how it affects the fuel pump seals Viton e.t.c
from what I have read the ratings and tests are Shell, then Tesco's, last was Asda which is said to be Russian fuel.
but that said if the underground tanks have water/ contaminants in them then that can also cause issues.

Incidentally I just worked out again how much you actually save (or not) by driving to a cheaper petrol station. For my 110 which does ~28mpg if I was filling a tank then it's only worthwhile diverting 1.5 miles (each way) for a 1p saving over a full tank (65 litres).
Obviously double the difference / economy then double the miles you can divert.

I always use an addative to my diesel, do not like low sulphur fuel, the sulphur was there for a reason, lubrication of the diesel injector pump etc.

Eldest son refines his own used veg oil, And has done for years, Even his Volvo trucks ran on it, paying the correct duty per litre of course, Just adds a little petrol to the mix for thinning the fuel a little in the winter. He even tried running his Toyota pickup on Hydrogen at one time but that didn't last very long,

If so, DONT use the plastic drain thing at the bottom. Get a spanner on the metal nut at the top and drop the whole bowl.
The plastic thing breaks...

saying that, yours may be a different design, as civillian defenders dont have the sedimenter (why only the discos had them, i dont understand, but still...)_

There wasn't a drain plug at the bottom that I could see, I was parked over a puddle and didn't want to get wet
I'll see if I can drop the bowl.
The more I drive it, the more I'm convinced it's the fuel.
Idle has gotten alot smoother, I dont have a rev gauge, I'm judging by how many things are rattling
, actually everything feels smoother, almost feels similar to when I put veg oil/2 stroke in .... I don't think you'd be able to tell the difference on a modern insulated car??
Modern engine management will compensate pretty well for differing fuel quantities, so you're not likely to notice much difference under normal use.
I know my transit custom stutters/hesitates at low rpm when I've used supermarket fuel for a couple tanks, but clears up once I fill up with some named brand fuel. It's all down to what additives (if any) that any given supplier adds after the refinery stage.
Then there was the major customer at work who opted for Key Fuels which meant most drivers were using Morrison's, and the number of fuel filters we were fitting increased noticeably during that period.
Bog standard diesel from Tesco for the last few years for me, no problems.
One of our subbies regularly fills his truck at Morrison's in Boroughbridge as the price is sometimes better than the agency/bunkering cards, (better part of 1500 litres
,), and he runs all over mainland Europe without problems. As an aside, he's a great guy to have a night out with. He always has a stash of wine in his truck, and he keeps a few lemons in the fridge for g&t's

I would have thought if there was the slightest truth in brand B being better than brand A then we would have seen a difference between not only suppliers but from other colleagues…. Most of us are buying between 5-10,000lts a week both of red and DERV and I happen to know the whole lot is sourced from the same terminal, Ships and tanks irrespective of what colour the delivery tanker is.
Pretty much every bulk user in the SE has had major problems since the spring.
I'm also positive if one particular distributor had fuel that wasn't causing issues, then they would be shouting from the rooftops.... however there silence (all of them) has been deafening and although they have failed to admit there's any issues now there all putting additives in to prevent bug.
Changed another set of filters yesterday, I know the issue is no longer being sourced in nor in any of our bulk tanks, Its now localised on each machine so the drain down program continues.

The SE is heavily reliant on diesel imports into terminals not operated by the major oil companies. Source of these imports and their transport is not operated by the major oil companies.

Bugs in diesel is nothing new, there have been biocide type additives since, neptune was a cabin boy. As a low user Ive treated our red tank since moving here.
Bugs in the dregs on a barge or smaller tankers tanks, and in the right conditions, quite difficult to get rid off from the tank, espescially if there carrying the same products, they wont be tank cleaning. If I remember correctly, the SRB grows in the water, that drops out.

I had the bug in the fuel tank of my Nissan van just after I bought it.
Was heading up the A1M to work one Sunday afternoon when the bug got into the fuel lines. Warning lights a-plenty on the dash, power on and off, and having to drive at 15mph on the hard shoulder
. It frightened the bejeesus out of me!! Took it into the Nissan boys in Hull, they cleaned out the fuel lines and filters (of what looks like thick snot...) told me to keep the tank topped up, and it's been okay since then.
