More expensive isn't always better

I'm doing my sons room, new high bed with a desk under it and other bits, decided to paint it.
Being a cost conscious Yorkshireman I did it myself, one tin of Dulux and one tin of B&Q own brand, different colours for different walls

The cheap paint is better in every way than the Dulux, goes on nicer, covers better, dries quicker and more even colour

Saving money as well

I've found the metal paint from lidl to be better than the hammerite paint.

Compare it to Farrow & Ball prices... then take the F&B swatch to the Valspar desk and have them scan the colour you want (Gooseturd Gray etc.) and away you go.

prices are about half what the diy stores charge - and the paint is *excellent*
last i bought was a litre of high zinc primer which iirc was £8+vat.

Two years ago, I painted some doors, doorframes, etc in B&Q white gloss paint. A few weeks later I then painted the kitchen door, frame and a larder cupboardand in Dulux white gloss.
The dulux is still bright white and the B&Q stuff has gone yellow and need re-doing

I prefer crown to Dulux in the high street shop tins, but the dulux from the dulux paint center and from the crown center is about on par....And have to agree on the quality gloss. Its always stays white longer.

The Farrow and Ball names irritate me

Spur of the moment, new bed was delivered so room was emptied (has to be flat pack due to size of room and bed) then I had to return some keys to an estate agent that happens to be near B and Q so decided I would paint the room before I built the bed up

I seem to remember that somewhere between 2010 and 2015 there was a big issue with Dulux White gloss turning yellow within weeks of it being applied and giving thousands back in compensation.

Solvent Vs water based perhaps? We've had this discussion before, water based satin is the way forward. Gloss is old hat now.

I remember being very impressed with the Dulux satinwood opacity, super bright white, but it just would not stick to old paint even with prep.

B&Q seem to have fallen out with crown, they don't stock anything. I used to use the crown satinwood but since it's harder to get now I've switched to valspar and it's just as good.

Anybody find the "one coat" claim to be true?
Years ago my uncle were in the trade, he said it were rubbish, always had to do a second coat to do a proper job.

I have never had a satisfactory finish with one coat paint. However, two coats of a one-coat is a better finish than two coats of any other cheap paint.

I’ve tried the one coat emulsion, found it so sticky it would pull the old paint off the plaster & give you bits all over the roller. It was also very hard work.

been there done it......the colour wasnt the same and the pain runs very easily (Eggshell) ....F&B is far better......I often restore old furniture and always use F&B so I buy a lot.....often get it cheap off ebay but cant always get the exact colour wanted

I did my garage doors in all Dulux to their specification. They claimed one coat of Weathershield was enough. It wasn't as some may recall. After some emails back and forth, I got a voucher for two litres of any colour I wish. Good of them but I would have preferred it to be as described.

Valspar is owned by Sherwin-Williams. A proper paint company.

Dulux is watered down crap, peddled as being this and that, and failing at all of them. Overpriced tosh.

Dulux trade may be marginally better but I’ll leave that to a full time decorator to decide.

I find the opposite, Dulux is super thick and I usually water it down myself to ease application. I've never had issue with dulux apart from the gloss yellowing after they banned the good stuff in white paint (it wasn't just dulux having problems either). Covers well and holds it's colour. Never used the weathershield stuff, always go for Sandtex for exterior (owned by crown I think). I've used all sorts of other stuff to try and save money but always end up going back to dulux, I do rate Valspar too though but not used it much.
