Metal shelving all the way for me. Timber uses up too much space - valuable space that you could use to store more junk, I mean goodies.

Consider using scaffold pipe and clamps for your frame ? Quick and easy to configure to exactly what you need and easy to change if need be. See what you can get used from a scaffolder. Rust can always be cleaned off and paint applied if you want it to look good.

Often get decent metal racking on bidspotter cheaper than getting to wood etc.

I normally go for the slightly heavier duty but my storage unit is big, but 440 for that number of bays seems good to me, there's alot there. And yeah it's a rabbithole of options on that site, I'm just off to do a collection of stuff from an auction last week. I'll try and remember to do a today I acquired post

+1 for BIGDUG look out for the offers on their site I have some S/H Dexion racking but disappointed with it will relocate it to the loft in due course.

Got some Dexion racking to go have a look at on Sunday. Will need to cut it to height as it's a good bit too high for my workshop. Getting three 1m x 2.7m, will see if I can squeeze in another after I get them in but not sure.

if you are looking at the industrial racking the racking is designed so you can join to make them higher

if cutting them down fix your top shelf as the top cut to size on that one

also note you can get smaller spans on dexion racking and if push comes to shove yo can buy 1-2mm 3-4" tubing and make your own shelve spans up as well

just beware of those clips on the end of them as other models dont fit others

Timber is fine if already have it but if you are buying it then you may as well buy new metal racking, it's not expensive.

that only depends on if you have a grinder and a welder, and a bit of imagination / motivation then yes like anything it can be adapted as necessary......

also got one hell of a good g clamp metal bender i cant remember what its called all welded up weighs a ton and needs 3 people to lift it

The main board is away getting fixed on the mig, a relay or something gave up the ghost. But it’s so basic being a Portaweld the guys have fixed it and sending it back within a week.

Will finally get round to putting the racking up this weekend. Lot of stuff moved and finish moving everything this evening and then get the racking up on the weekend and start moving stuff back. Will get some pics and update my workshop thread when done.

Finished moving stuff through then got the racking cut down and erected today. Very pleased, now to organise and put everything back. And to fix the light which stopped working.

if your drop the far wall shelf racking down by a rung it will allow you to use a 3" long box there at the ceiling height

and you got no shelf supports in the middle you do need them otherwise board will drope in the middle

The big shame about most of this racking is the wasteful use of 4`x8` ( @eLuSiVeMiTe ) sheets on 1mtr wide racks, almost worth reducing the shelf width to save on timber.

Aye. Most of my benches are 600 and shelves 300 for this reason
Even so gives 200mm strips. Nice size for shelving above machines.
