Bob, any chance of a photo from the other side of that chainsaw bench mount.. been thinking of making something similar to bolt through the bar bolts /nuts to hold them in place when testing / fixing... was thinking along the lines of cutting off the rsend of an old guide bar and make up a bench mount with swivel joint to suit..

That's a really useful idea. So much easier than clamping the bar in a vice and never being able to get the right angle on anything you want to work on

now there's a design I'm liking that a lot, hadn't seen that thread.. excellent idea, far simpler and more efficient than what I'd come up with in my head to date... permission to copy requested... copyright Bob obviously...

spent many happy hours chasing them round a bench too..............

I knew a guy who had an old stihl two manner ... I never used it but it looked a awesome bit of kit...you would need to really trust the other guy ...

My uncle has a 2man Stihl, sat in parts waiting on a carb. Dont think you’ll catch me holding on to the other end of the bar any time soon.

A big Lime tree. It was the best option in this case to use a saw with a bar longer than the diameter of the tree.

Cross cutting and chipping a tree we winched over to notice the enthusiastic digger driver digging around our next target.

Big old oak. 6' dia
Wondered over and asked if he wanted me to put the tirfor on it and lop some weight off the back.

No no. I know what I'm doing.

Furry muff.

Leave him to it and go help my old man.

5 minuites later I look up to see the tree go in slow motion right onto the steels for the extension on a grade 2 listed building.

Rest of the day was spent on wet planks cutting the top out so a winch digger and forklift could pull the blighter back over.

For awkward hard wood trees we had a little jack that could be placed at the back of the tree and tip it over. We had to be carful not to mark the trunks as they were getting sold to a furniture maker. The big Lime was for firewood as it was rotten half way up. You can get hydraulic tree jacks now, i still like battering in hi lift wedges!

I never ask my lads to operate unorthodox tools or machinery...I do whats best for me to get the job done and self supervise my own risks When your self employed and feed yourself from your own direct efforts it kinda changes the whole "whats safe" ethos, a bit like hunting dangerous wild game just to feed the family without the safety bollards and barrier tape

Think its usually a safe bet that if your big european, asian and american tool companies dont make a tool its for a reason

Your never gonna see likes of Makita, Bosch or Metabo make the stuff like chainsaw attachments for grinders or circular saw blades for them

I don’t know why, but I have a hankering for something that size makes my jonsered 621 with a 24” bar look a bit wet. Could do with something with a bit of poke , I have some big lumps of oak that are mine if I can plank them
