That makes sense with shotgun cartridges, not so much with the cases I have. Most are handgun rounds like the .38 specials I mentioned earlier.

I have spent 12-bore cartridges I use for that, but there's not much point on putting them on my winter alloys - they wait until the summer wheels & tyres go back on.

strange thing to sayI've melted down loads of scrap brass of all descriptions. well my brother has and cast all sorts of plaques and items heres a few grit valve . blasting gun. casting of an original and railway sign
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Melt it at full tilt and it will probably vaporise as has been mentioned here.
Melt it properly at a controlled temp and you’ll have melted brass
I’ve had a go at melting a box of old brass screws in my electric furnace, came out a treat

Back in the eighties, when I was a kid, the MOD,had an area of rough ground leased, for training. The RAF Regiment, from lossiemouth, would go on exercise and set up a Rapier battery. Used to go up after they had left and scrounge around. Used to gather up the spent all the spent 7.62mm rounds. Used to pick up the clips for joining the rounds into machine gun belt. Used to clip them back into belts and sell / trade them with my mates.
Used to get some good stuff left behind. Found a gas mask in its pouch, an SLR magazine, burners out of ration packs. Had a nice little collection, until my mother chucked it out.

Because they are spending more in propane than the scrap metal is worth.
And taking the risk that a live round ends up in the pot.

Not if they’ not paying for the propane. Not so long ago they
hiab’d out 20 cradles full of them from the local gas supplies

40 odd years ago (back in my RAF days) we used to make tankards out of a spent 30mm Aden cannon shell, a Hunter starter cartridge and a couple of 7.62mm rifle cases. Never had one myself (didn't appeal at the time!) so don't have a pic. But the starter cartridge was about 3 -4" in diameter and held about a pint and a half, the 30mm shell formed a handle and the two 7.62 joined the two together top and botom.

That is an issue with bins from ranges
The cases I have are all deprimed, can guarantee not one live round will get through.

Where I used to work in Africa offshore, the flare was lit by firing a 20mm incenduary bullet up driven by air, these hit a striker plate and ignited the gas, bits falling into a "bucket". Maintence stratergy was vague to say the least, but stated bucket only held 400 spent bullets, so a cartridge count was kept. So roll on 3 year shutdown, cartridge count at about 350, inspecting was ignored as it was in the low priority, too difficult box, next shutdown count was up past 500, and again ignored and in the too difficult box......next time round count now above 800, they decided to risk asses falling spent bullets, so it was again put off, then about 3 weeks before the shutdown bits of steel fell from the top of the tower, 302 meters. Mad panic to make a plan to go up and inspect repair.
There was more worry grief etc over potentially live rounds than the steel structure being compromised. When we got up there to look, thered been so much heat the bucket was distored and half rotted away, the incenduraies just a melted mess in the bottom. But bits of handrail and grating were gone, but thats what happens when you flare beyond design for months!
