Was in the middle of moving down the country and wife was living at my mums for 3 weeks. Leaving Monday morning for work from Luton to deepest darkest Devon
Bought a load more back each weekend I came back.

5 year support. That's from release date not date of purchase. So you could be stuck with a Chromebook with no support.
In which case shove a Linux distro on it and crack on.
I will be making the move to Linux this year on all but my DAW which will remain windows 7 but cut off from the network.

I am on my second one now got the first when they were relatively new john lewis had a promotion on including a year's free unlimited data sim included, that thing paid for its self in the first six months as I was commuting and staying away with work back then. The battery life is fantastic. If you sign in when using chrome on your pc whatever device you pick up you can just continue where you left off, no more worrying about syncing or remembering what devise you were working on last time.

I have had iPads for a decade or so now, great little devices. They have their restrictions though, being Apple, and a friend once gave me long, complicated and detailed instructions on how to ’jail break’ it and install some aftermarket software that was far superior....
