Looking for lower quill bearing for progress drill (double row thrust ball) tried the usual suppliers but no luck yet, @ronan & @rtbcomp did you change yours.
Drill locked solid found a 3/16 x 1\8 bit of hardened steel mixed up in quill above the lower bearing has made quite a mess of both the inner & outer quill, might have to build up the inner to re cut circlip grove.
No noise just locked when started cant find any thing broken the bit is so hard wont file almost like a broken ball or case hardened part.

Found broken bearing cage Dogs look good, Shaft is a mess The lay gear shaft is pulling the lower bearing out of the housing rather than shaft from it Ideas please

Make some wedges to drive between the two. I can't recall any grub screws. But, be aware, there is a grub screw, sometime two, in the hole at the front of the head. It retains the lower oild seal housing.

Sorry 500e, i've never gone that deep into my progress. It does need work, but currently i am working on my lathe, mill and surface grinder, when i have those done i will do the drill. Bearings ? There is a place in Holmfirth does odd sized and old bearings i think you could try and this place too ;

The two bearings marked EP1.06 are 7/8" x 1-7/8" x 3/8" and not as shown in the drawing.

@Seadog thanks for bearing correction found the grub screw only one1 had a good feel around with a pick, made a tool & removed the bearing & one oil seal but there are 2 in there.
Did you find a separate bearing carrier that comes out of casting ? the build up appears to be from the top of lower bearing in the main casting, bearing, seal,then a shelf \ separator & then another seal, it has had a bit of persuasion but seems solid same as bearing housing the 1\2 grub screw does not seem to doing anything.even though it looks as if it is holding161-50
Hate to resort to violence any further info would be helpful.
To remove the idler shaft made up a fork with thick end's & slid between Tufneol gear & casting so it rested on steel boss then the slide hammer pulled it ok
this one has Tufnol gear selector same as yours
Nearly striped but not found what appeared in pick to be a damaged bearing it would appear to have been an optical illusion well that's my story & am sticking to it

@Seadogs drawing was a help but the lower main bearing does not seem quite the same, It appearers from drawing that there is a housing pressed into the cast frame held in by 1\2 grub screws can only find one! there does not appear to be a second one underneath the first,( had a good dig with a pick)
Made a tool to pull the bearing out of the housing then knocked the seal out both upwards, there is 2nd seal below what seems to be a land in the casing or bearing housing, seal is below the land housing.tapping this seal does not move it may have given it a bit more than a tap but it is shot anyhow whatever did the damage chewed it up.
I can see the reason for the housing as it lets you build seals & bearings & install as one so seal damage is less likely,
It would be nice if someone could defiantly say Yes 161-50 is an insert, it definitely looks so
Tomorrow I will have another look for the second grub screw.

Did you find a separate bearing carrier that comes out of casting ?

There was certainly a threaded ring which retained a housing. I only remember a seal in it but it was 15 years ago since I last stripped it.

Removed the first grub screw cleaned hole dug about with a pick could not find or see a second Allen screw, mate measured hole depth then measured angle did some maths & We decided there was something still in there! left hand drill nothing moved but drilled right through collar, NOTE the collar comes out upwards, do not drive it down it wont exit the lower part of the casting & it is a pita to get back in to remove correctly.
All the bearings have come to about £250 with VAT & next day delivery so cleaning repair to circlip grove remove damage to internal & external surfaces of quill mechanism & re assemble
