Lever hoist not lifting

I have just got a 6 ton lever hoist. The plait on the handle has LiftinGear which i thought was the make but carnt fined anything about it.
when you wined the handle in the upwards setting the chain will lift but then on the back stroke goes back down again. Just the same as a cheep Chinese one i bought from ebay one time.
I have taken it apart. The pinion shaft is smooth spinning in the gear box. what looks to be happening is the ratchet part of the handle (possible called the change gear) tightens down on the pinion shaft putting pressure on the friction plates but then on the back stroke release instantly freeing up the friction plates again. I carnt see why this is happening.
Both friction plates are 3mm and the drive ratchet gear is 5mm.
Any advice on whats happening and wear to buy parts would be appreciated.

Many many Moons ago, I stripped a similar one for the same problem, Many remember much but I think that the helix threaded piece forces the friction plates together on the return stroke, therefore holding the load between strokes, On the down stroke the plates are released,

Thanks for response. That is what it is doing.But once the pressure is of the plates this then allows the chain to lower again. I think what should happen. On the upstroke of the handle the ratchet pinon gear runs down the pinion gear shaft tightening onto the friction plates. Then on the back stroke of the handle the pressure on the plates holds it in position, the handle being allowed to move without turning the ratchet pinion gear. The handle is then in correct position ready for the upstroke and engages with the ratchet pinion via the pawl mecanisum . I just carnt figure out why its not working. I assume that the friction plates should not be greased ?

Have you tried it with weight on it? I use similar ones at work and they sometimes wont work properly until they have some tension to operate the clutch properly. On the other end, if it gets overloaded and the handle is stuck and wont release,a good whack with a mallet in the release direction will often free it up as the clutch plates get pressed together very hard with the weight.

Also have they been tried in the correct orientation as some done like to be used horizontally

Thanks for reply's. Will try it with more weight on and in correct orientation. Its not worth much to me if it carnt be used in bad position and starting off with very little tension on lifting hook. I am trying to get a slightly stiffer spring for it to see if this will help. thanks again
