Tree stump removal

I have about 13 nr tree stumps to remove from my garden and their roots as eventually il hopefully be putting a metal framed garage up.
I have no means of getting any diggers in and also not the free time to dig them out.
I have already ground them down below ground level with a portable stump grinder but they all need gone.

I was thinking of burning them out as it will allow me to set fire to them and leave them to their own devices.

Anyone done it successfully?

What type of tree? How big are the stumps? How far down did you go with the grinder?

Down about a foot and they are Leylandii.
Ranging from 300mm dia up to 600mm dia.

I was thinking drill down in, top up with diesel and burn off

I tried burning a stump out.
It didn't work, I ended up digging it out with an axe and 8 foot metal bar.
It was no fun whatsoever.

Too late now but if I was removing laylandi and roots I'd Chuck a tirfor around them and winch them over roots and all.
Get in the root all with an axe and pick to ease them out.

Only way your getting them out now is digging.

I’ve used the chemical stuff, applied to holes drilled in the stump. It works but not quick

If the OP needs them out sooner rather than later, digging them out is the way ahead now.

If time allows.
Copper sulphate into drilled holes in the stump.
Copper nails into the roots.

Burning them out.
Spilt the stump into 1/4's, open the splits up and fill will sawdust and diesel and burn them out.

Stump killer from a decent farmers outlet.

The green way is to cut as many roots as you can and cover with a light proof membrane.

i've burnt out privet stumps.
unfortunately, the only way to do it properly, is to dig a pit around the stump, fill with firewood.
by the time you've done that, you might as well dig out the whole thing.

for future reference: leave 6ft of tree for leverage.

works a treat on hedges too. once the first ones out and the ground is disturbed the rest come out even easier

The Welsh variant on that is a great big rope / chain and a tractor. Dump the clutch and away you go

If you're a professional like @8ob then you use a 3 point winch on the back of a tractor.

If you're a professional like @8ob then you use a 3 point winch on the back of a tractor.

With a tirfor, with limited access I'd just strop one stump to another stump and get winching. Rinse and repeat until you've got one stump left.

You can rig it up double purchase if you need a bit of extra advantage.
