I thought what a hypocrite. He has made millions from possibly the most ungreen sport In the world, flew a private jet, which he avoided paying tax on by buying it through the Isle of Man, all over the world between races and then says WE should go vegan to save the planet. To be honest, I’ve never liked him. Always come across as thinking he’s better than everyone and everything.

A little accident in his direction wouldn’t be a bad thing, nothing serious, just something to shake him up a bit

I don't think it's hypocrisy, he's right of course and we all know it. The only reason we care what one person thinks is because he is so well known that millions if not hundreds of millions of people know who he is and will listen to what he says. The global market for meat makes F1 look as polluting as a clockwork toy in comparison.

On the other hand, he really should have steered away from that topic since that sport (which is let's face it, is doomed) represents the excesses of mankind and our obsession with fossil fuels. In many ways, it is a celebration of our discovery of petrol and internal combustion. It's no worse than say, football or horseracing or tennis or again, let's be honest, ANY global sport which ferries teams around the world and deliberately attracts audiences to visit.

If we're going to pick and choose global endeavours what about space exploration? Gonna be a while before we "pay back" for Neil Armstrongs little trip and throwing the Hubble space telescope up there just for a few pretty pictures, well that's got to stop...

The only reason it matters what one person says vs. what they night do is the audience who would be prepared to listen. Lewis' only mistake is that his particular occupation is heavily sponsored by the oil industry. I suspect he is too wrapped up in his own bubble to fully appreciate the absurdity of his newfound passion for sustainability. I have no doubt one or two of his advisors would have been on the phone to point that out - in a hurry!

the space race has paid for itself many times over.
and the technology which is getting "pretty puctures" from hubble is also allowing medical imaging to spot all sorts of ailments *much* earlier than before.

The production of electronics such as smartphones and the power consumed in keeping them charged etc, beggars belief. The global market for smartphones makes meat look as polluting as a clockwork toy in comparison.
We should all give up electronics.

Hypocrisy (noun) - the practice of claiming to have higher standards or more noble beliefs than is the case

Meat isn't the problem any more than racecars are the problem, any more than cars are the problem. PEOPLE are the problem, We consume... that's what we do . Yes we can pick away at some of the worst offenders - international flights on holiday is right up there - but how can we say "we're doing the green thing" when we still have plenty of carbon-fuelled power stations?

Let's work away at the worst things, such as the lunacy of flying lamb meat over from New Zealand... just sheer wastefulness that should be taxed.

why become completly vegan , a balanced diet which means a little bit of everything is what we need , I think the statement of everything in moderation which I used to think weird actualy does make sence, lets face it most of us have seen what burger chains have done to americans , as for saving the planet I do what I can to curb excess , one question though are all the lights turned of in vegas after say 3am ? and do commercial flights still go with a hanfull of passengers rather than full load. Lewis has grown up somewhat in recent years which is good to see , his attitude towards other drivers has improved immensley , hopefully in years to come he will continue to improve as I geuss we all would like to think we do as well.

Of course it is. It goes without saying all we should do is tend the vegetable patch and sit around knitting. Any more than that and there are just too many humans for this jewel of a planet to support.

Lewis is the king of petrol heads and is of course in no position to preach. However, he is in a position to help, he just needs to discover what direction that may be, it is most certainly not ecology. Thankfully there are plenty of other disasters he could get on his high horse to lead a charge. Poverty and famine might be a good start, plastic waste perhaps. He has the money and the fame to make a difference and as his career tails off, clearly he is beginning to feel a twinge of guilt and find a conscience. I still rate him as both a driver and a role model, he just has to find some worthy cause that doesn't bite the hand that feeds him.
