I use en16 for general wear stuff (lathe screw for example)as its pretty strong but friendly enough for hss tooling
En3 for non wear stuff that may need to be welded
En24t for high stress stuff, can be pita with hss drills and prone to failure if subject to shock loads which really suprised me once when my temporary en8 replacement lasted longer and became permanent!
Special steels when on drawing specs
I use old non hardened hydraulic ram chrome steel as a free source of steel
Ive got a few tons of leaded free cutting steel (pudding bar) which I use occasionally but I don’t really like it as I don’t trust its strength and its poor to weld and sometimes you don’t know what the part you’re making is for
I use acton bright steels now mc creedy are gone
Some one inch round en8 x 3m long was £24 from them
