A question for the catchists

Looking for some suitable catches to replace the crap ones on front of my mobile 3/4" and 1/2" drive socket set boxes, lost count of the times the contents have ended up on the floor.


They need to stay flush with the width of the boxes because I stack them, not unlatch with a knock and be able to fix to plastic that's not very thick. Any idea`s ?

Eric the lower 3/4" box only has a handle on the lower section so there`s nothing to cable tie, could really do with something that sits relatively flush and thats not easily unlatched.

What about removable tie wraps, available in several sizes & strength. I’ve used them to good effect holding my air hose reels.

and they *do* work.
got some on my drill bit box - pop riveted on.

Probably need to make backing plates for the inside of the plastic case, and fix through with 4mm aluminium pop rivets.

washers work for backing plates. it depends on the type of plastic whether theyre needed

Those plastic 'tabs' on my Halfords socket set case also went west some time ago, I like the idea of fitting a couple of latches but I think that the front of mine is rather curved so screwing/fitting them could be a bit tricky.

heat with a hot air gun until it goes gooey, and press with a piece of 3x2 to make a flat spot?

I had the same problem with the dog-toffee catches having pinged off a blow-moulded Bahco box within weeks of getting it. Eventually I put 2” sticky-backed heavy-duty Velcro hook tape on the top and bottom, then used a couple of bits of 2” sew-on loop tape as straps.

I degreased with brake cleaner before applying the sticky stuff.

It's held up pretty well so far. I work on site and used to consider it pretty good to go a fortnight without having to pick up the contents of the box from the floor. It’s been over six months since the Velcro went on and I’ve not had to grovel on the floor since.

Cut a dog collar in half and rivet the cut ends to either side so you can buckle up.
