Nasty stuff . Just heard of someone having the top of a finger amputated as the result of its flesh eating properties. Wouldn't go near it but seem to remember reading a long time ago that heating some more common substance could release it - would it be viton oil seals?

In a fire or high temp situation anything made of Viton rubber breaks down to give of HF

In F1, no one is allowed near an engine after a fire. Has to be thoroughly washed down first

Nope, that's sulphuric acid and hydrogen peroxide.

I know someone who made some furniture out of motorbike chain, he would burn it with a blowtorch to burn out the seals and grease before tacking each link to make the shape he wanted

Viton is quite good. I suspect it’s widely used on all sorts.

I suspect you more knowledgeable car and bike people will be aware of this

I bought gallons of HF acid (Neolith 625SS, 12% HF) to clean the stonework on the house. I did try it out, it worked but although I had all the correct PPE I was still quietly pooing my pants. So sold it to the guys who sand blasted the house instead. One of the guys had spent time in intensive care previously when he spilt some on himself and they thought he was going to have a cardiac arrest due to the way it searches out calcium, which apparently affects the muscles in the heart.

However, when he tested it before buying, he refused any PPE and poured it from a full gallon container into a small vessel he was holding, what an idiot. He didn't spill it but why take the risk?

It is. Quite a few idiots have lost fingers and hands to it using it for graffiti as you can daub it onto glass like ink from a marker pen. The effects don’t show instantly on the body, either.
