Bike Crankcase welding

Hi,

I've got a cracked crankcase on my bike following a small off (v frustrating!). The crack in in a non-structural part of the bike (generator housing) but does hold oil so need the crack fixed up. Is this possible to get a crack like this welded? I guess the casting thickness is about 2mm where the crack is, the crack is about 3" long.

Whilst I've been keen to start learning to weld properly I don't have the time or funds at the moment and I don't reckon this wouldn't be the ideal job to start on!

So if there is anyone near Fleet, Hants want to earn some money for the job or know a welding company that will do house calls please let me know!

Yep can be done depending where it is and if you can get it clean. I did one last week it took longer to make an extractor to get the rotor off than to weld it. I tend to weld inside and out when I do these as quite often the access is better from the inside. post a photo so we can have a look. If you cant find anybody closer come to sunny Somerset!!!!

Have one of my own to do, but it's a bit more than fix a crack.

The brass bits screwed in isn't meant to be there;-)
I was going to ask if anyone near me has an inverter tig, I would like to try
one. If it's in bits and gatwicks not to far I can probably do it.

The bike is a CBR954 ('03). Quite thin at the point of the crack. I guess a cats eye positioned itself at just the right point the hit the alternator cover.

I'll try post up a pic later tonight. Motor is still in the bike but I've got the rotor off and it looks like there is reasonable room on the inside, underneath might be a bit more tricky.

Yes 1936 MAC. I should have taken a picture after I cleaned the cases, ten minutes with a poundshop wallpaperstripper filledwith 10% truckwash and the cases look like new. I cleaned the rod with it and the forging looks new!

Shouldn't be to hard once I start on it.

I had some damage to a crankcase on an XR500R welded by someone who worked for Vosper Thorneycroft (Portsmouth), and a Husqvarna done by someone in maintenance at Westland Helicopters (Yeovil). Both were good oil tight repairs and never gave any problems afterwards - both used for motocross.

Ive welded a few lambretta casings in my time , where the flywheel comes through the side not had one that I couldnt weld , and a Triumph casing , dont know my bikes but always welding the things up !

Hi All!

I, too have done a fair share of bike engine repairs, I reckon that UK wide, some one could make a very good living out of welding alloy engine casings up!

I remember one job where this decidedly dodgy outfit had a marine engine which had been dropped off the fork truck whilst unloading it. the sump was like a jig saw puzzle, no welding gear just oxy-acet burning gear! I had to weld it with flux coated gas welding rods, took me a week of after work hours but it held it's oil when done! A fortnight after I'd done that job, he rings me up to say the fork truck driver had done the same with a cast iron sump and could I come and repair that!
