Hi,
In the hopes that someone on here has some experience configuring VLans (there always seems to be someone that knows around here (he said hopefully)).
I am looking to set up a VLan in my home as I have updated my CCTV system to use IP cameras but I am not overly happy with exposed network cables run around the outside of the house (I know chances of someone making use of them is low, but better safe than sorry).
I have a smart managed main hub and will shortly be receiving some smaller 8 ports hubs but wanted to check my understanding is correct (It is all Netgear and so they use Untagged ports, Tagged ports and them some ports are not assigned anything).
The layout will look like this (it is a bit simplified - I tend to collect bits of useless technology which is not shown, a later project may be to add another VLan for some of the smart devices!)
My plan was to create 2 VLans, one for the CCTV and one for everything else. If my understanding is correct, I could create 2 VLans, assign the ports that go to a CCTV camera as untagged ports on the CCTV VLan only, ports for the computer VLan would be assigned as untagged for just the computer VLan and those ports which go to the higher level switches would need to be tagged (aka Trunk ports in Cisco speak?) for all VLans that are used on that switch (or any lower level switch).
Am I correct in this? Also if the top level switch port to the router is tagged for each VLan I assume they would get internet access, but no access to the other VLan? I assume that as long as all of the ports leading to outside cables are on a VLan they would only be able to see other devices on that VLan and not those assigned to other VLans? For connections to the unmanaged switches, can I just put these as untagged on the computer VLan and all of the devices hanging off that switch will then be on that VLan?
What happens to the ports that are not tagged for either VLan?
I would be grateful for any advice is someone has experience with these.
