I strongly suspected it was wax as I was OK last night........just one ear but really deaf.......coulodnt hear the wife shouting at me (did wonder whether to get it sorted)......phoned Docs and 3 weeks wait...whats gone wrong with the Docs these days...3 weeks......so I went to Boots and bought an ear syringing kit....done it and I can hear again........how did all that stuff get inside my ear......loads of it and a big lump

It's quite common bunged ears .Happens to some more than others as they produced excess wax to defend the ear. Cleaning the ears with cotton buds can push the wax further down the canal which then leads to blockage. I 've got a ear infection at the moment cause by ear plugs.

Ah....cotton buds, they haven't been the same since the tree-huggers got the stems changed to cardboard. 
And my Mum used to say "never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear". Turns out she was correct...again. 
As @Wonderweaver says, quite a common problem. @TechnicAl Could the practise nurse/nurse practitioner not have done the syringing for you?

Which kit did you get Al? I've got terrible hearing for my age and I'd love to know if its just a wax blockage.

That makes me smile . on leaving HMF in Dec 1980 just before Christmas I was given the final medical by the same guy who'd given me my initial one on joining the apprentice boy soldiers unit almost 15 years earlier . He was a retired doddering red nosed sherry slurping Colonel even in those days back in 1966 .
I was given a clean bill of health , despite having a very visible pink 58 cm of operative scar from when the MOD appointed surgeon tried to rebuild a smashed up left shoulder and had little use of my arm . I'm out on 21 Dec 1980 .........… a civvy Yipeeee!
Come 10 Feb or so 1981 I'm on my hands & knees in our new home , using my good arm trying to unroll a carpet that has been delivered & placed rolled up in the empty lounge , when suddenly a very loud crack happened and I too went deaf in both ears .... felt as dizzy as a blonde barmaid , went all giddy & puked up .
Wife calls the doc who came within minutes of being called , he gives me the once over , looks in everywhere , prods & pokes me like a woman choosing peaches in Tesco's. He looked in my right ear and said " I think we'll sort your ears out just to be on the safe side " . So warm olive oil for four days in both ears with a cotton wool plug to retain it and then in for a syringing session . One horse syringe of warm water in the right lughole and my eyeballs feel as though theyr are going to pop out of my head when suddenly everything releases . I heard a clang in the stainless steel kidney dish being held under my right ear .
Doc looks at me and almost shouts . " Well Mr G that didn't suddenly happen in the last few weeks did it ?
Laying in the dish amongst all manner of weird hairy sandy & rusty deleterious was a very big date stone sized lump of black gunge . I could hear sparrows singing , his wall clock ticking and a church clock some two miles away chiming the 1/4 hr .
I asked him if I could see what was inthe lump . He said " Yes " , after he did my left ear which had exactly the same results .
In both lumps was a mass of wax & navy blue fibres from wearing my army beret and loads of sand & rust particles from my last days as a mechanic.
Great …. I hadn't been anywhere near my tool boxes for over 18 months and hadn't worn a service uniform for well over nine months. I'd love to get old of that old BSTD who passed me A1 on the final medical , I didn't even know he'd given me a hearing test till almost five years later when I appealed against a disabled soldiers award decision . Turns out he'd given me 100 % hearing in both ears , 20/ 20 vision & no mention of the damage to my shoulder .
I asked for a Nurse appointment.......think the Doc was longerSorry to read that.

Around 1974 I was removing an engine from a VW camper , clamped the fuel hose underneath the motor then removed the hose with a few drops falling out, turned my face to avoid petrol in my eye ,it went into my ear. INSTANT earache like you wouldn’t believe, totally screwed up sense of balance so a trip to A and E . Doctor checked my ear which had stopped aching and said no sign of any wax unlike the other ear

Just by coincidence I had an accident with a cotton bud in my ear last week....it stayed in there for 3 days and then I got fed up and pulled it out with the help of a £12.99 ear camera that I bought on Amazon.
Reckon A&E wait for something so trivial would have been 6 hrs maybe.
Of course you should never ever put anything in your ear.....but if you've already broken that rule....well!
Maybe I'll take a picture with it and post it here.....amazing camera and I figured it would come in handy down the garage too!

It's amazing how something so simple (pressure in your ear) messes up pretty much all of your functions and causes so much pain.
Had several infections over the years including last year an infection which caused a perforated eardrum. Was not nice.

I had a mig splatter perforate my ear drum. I shook my head to get the red hot ball out and made another hole ! 12 months of hospital visits, reduced hearing on one side and threat of surgery if it hadn't healed itself makes me wary careful of splatter now.

I occasionally have a good soak in the bath with my ears under the water then use one of those ear candles from Holland and Barrett.... you should see what comes out!!
I rarely use ear buds but even when I do it is clean so god knows how deep it goes but I daren't dig any deeper
