Web Hosting?

Getting bored with the weekly Support chats due to email issues.

They’re refusing to put me on a different server as the problem, “isn’t serious enough currently”. Which is handy, NOT!

So, looking for something reasonably priced to host a 3 page (currently) website, and provide 4 or 5 email addresses.

Nothing too fancy, using Wordpress at the moment, because I have neither the time or patience to write a website from scratch in my very limited spare time.

Oh, I have one domain name to transfer over too.

Any suggestions?

I use go daddy for mine, with the site builder, office package, etc all included and its pretty reasonable priced.

I do use Yandex for my email though - some Russian lot but it works faultlessly and was easy af to set up once I clicked the translate button in chrome. It's free too with no ads in the mobile app

Off the top of my head I can't remember, but I think its something like a tenner a month for the top end package and I paid 99p for the domain name for 2 years (I get first dibs on renewing it before one of you *insert expletive here* tries taking it!)

A few points.

Stay away from the larger companies. Fasthosts, 123 Reg, Go daddy, TSO et al, are rubbish without exception. Their shared hosting servers will be packed to the point of absurdity.

Don't register the domain with the hosting company.

The big boys try to pull in the uninitiated with offers of 99p domain registration for the first year. Have a look to see how much they are going to screw you for after the first year.

For a simple Wordpress site there is no need to pay much more than about a fiver per month to get a decent service.

Small companies like Hi Hosting are pretty good. I can recommend Dan myself. I host one of my main money sites with him.

Slightly larger you've got companies like Freethought internet who are also pretty good.

Recently I've started using Stablepoint, it was started by Seb and the guys who started Vidahost many moons ago. They sold out to TSO for a tidy sum, and TSO subsequently ruined Vidahost, but Stablepoint is where Vidahost used to be when it was excellent.

Complaints and SPAM reports were met with bounces fromthe abuse desk and telephone calls fared no better. Hopefully 1&1 have dealt with that, but they aren't squeaky clean either of course. I keep my business with them because I like the control interface, especially for the email hosting.

My web host is Kcom and I am stuck with them unless I want to build a completely new webshop as there seems to be no way to migrate all the data.

Good points raised and I'd echo them. The big boys are fine for registrar purposes but I'd not be inclined to use for hosting as they are packed in like sardines. Always try and keep the domain provider separate from the hosting provider. When one goes belly up it's easier to sort usually.

I pay 65 quid a year inc vat for hosting. It runs three or four sites and email for them. Most importantly the customer service is excellent and I don't have to deal with boring web stuff

@ajlelectronics - no such thing as can't . Just cleverer code required. If you do decide to try and move then give me a shout and we'll see if we can get that database ported or exported.

the site i have is free im on the basic package

however its forum based as goes for emails i dont think we have many and to be honest i havent looked into the email side of it

to be honest its been flawless since creating it 2 1/2 years ago
it does its own back ups so i dont have to do
i registered a name with them when joining
however the payed side of it is a bit dear but i dont know enough for building websites to go elsewhere

weve had 2 server downs for server upgrades which dosnt last long

When you say packed in, what issue would that cause? I've had no downtime and any issues I have managed to get sorted while on the phone to the support team and only taken a few mins.

Renewal is also stated to only be max of £10 so didn't think that was atrocious

Had a look at GoDaddy, 1&1, etc and they all seem to ramp their prices up after 6 or 12 months.

HiHosting seem to tick all the boxes, so will probably end up using them.

Quite annoyed as I went from using a small hosting company, and managing 10-12 sites through a single account a decade ago, to iPage as the smaller company were struggling with the traffic from 150000 teenagers accessing multiple times a day.

Full of regret about it now, as it’s been a pain ever since.

With respect, do you know the difference between a good and bad experience with a web host? The site in your profile scores 16 / 100 if you run it through page speed insights for mobile.

We use Bytemark with a dedicated server and they are excellent.
You can get a vps from them for next to nothing.
Domain name hosting we use 123-reg which is free.

Keeping your dns and hosting separate makes moving your site / email to a new provider very easy in the future.

Depends what you want from a site.

My broadband is with Plusnet and they will host a website as part of the broadband deal. Given it's quite small it may be worth looking at.

I’ve been using the free web hosting supplied by tiscali (now TalkTalk). With out warning it’s now gone, destroying all my threads where I had the pictures hosted on what I thought was my area of the net.
I will be leaving tiscali as soon as I’ve moved all my email addresses away from them. Their service is rubbish and all the services that were free (tv, mobile sim, etc) are all sneakily charged for now. I’m sure they did tell me when they started charging but with the amount of junk mail they send out I just don’t read all of it.
