Sykes Pickavant Flaremaster Original Version Help

I've just picked up one of these it's the original Flaremaster not not the newer MK2 version but it only came with 2 punches one of the single flare punches is missing. Does anyone have the earlier version how can you identify if the single flare punch is the SAE or the DIN one?. The two I have do have a number stamped on them the conical second Op is stamped as number 7 and the flare punch is marked number 1

Thanks for the pictures but mine is the more basic hand held version looks like yours is the more sophisticated bench mount type, nice bit of kit you have there.

Yeah its the vice mounted version. Used to be my dads when he had the motor spares shop. It does perfect flares every time.

I have the very early vice mount version (the one where the split dies are held in by a big wing nut). On hols at present but if nobody else comes up with a suitable reply pm me in a weeks time & I’ll send photos of my punches.

Yes, biggest mistake I made, only bought mine with 3/16 & 1/4 sizes could do with 1/2 now but never tracked down the dies/punches as yet.

Contact SP direct, they do have spares, you may have to wait a few weeks. They will wait until a suitable order is in to supply.

They appear on Flea Bay, as well as online tool spares suppliers.

The original Flaremaster was a flawed design , it would break very easily across the clamp , seen it on several of the tools as well as my own. I think the dies are available as they are the same? as the dies for the SP turret type tool . I may possibly still have the dies from my old Flaremaster?

Hi Eric, I have the flaremaster 2, but as I understand it, the Mk2 only exists because part of the Mk1 would break. Anyway the punches are the same I believe. On the punches there is a knurling. On the DIN punch there is a groove cut into it, the SAE punches it is solid. I'll sort you some photos if I can.

Yes I've read a few posts here and there that the clamps of the Flaremaster 1 are a weak point the one I have came with 2 clamps both in good condition and I could fairly easily mill replacement clamps from steel if they break. The original ones seem to be made from some sort of zinc type alloy so no wonder they are a weak link.

I downloaded the instructions for the Flaremaster 2 and it does explain that you can tell the difference between the punches via the groove cut into the knurl on one of the punches but the earlier versions on the Flaremaster 1 are different they thread into the piston and have a hex on the end and the only identification is a number stamped on them.

As the main issue is how the punch I do have forms the front part of the flare how much different is the front face of an SAE flare compared to the DIN/ISO type? if you used the wrong one would the front part form correctly as the brake line is tightened down?

If it helps, the centre pin on the DIN is 3mm, on the two SAE punches it's 2.7mm

Thanks for the pictures Sid. Here are the pictures for the punches I have for my Flaremaster V1. As you can see unlike the Flaremaster 2 collet type punches the earlier versions are threaded and have the number 7 and 1 on them.

A look at the front of the punches, the centre pin the number 1 punch (one the right) is 2.7mm so maybe the SAE punch if it's the same as the later Flaremaster 2 punches you have Sid so I could be missing the DIN punch.

Called Sykes this morning and found out from them that the punch I'm missing is the DIN one and they still keep parts in stock for the older version of the Flaremaster so ordered a replacement from them. Thanks guys for your help I will post up some extra information once I get the extra punch so anyone else with one of these older version can identify what they have.
