Joiner or carpenter?When i first started work, (on site Selby mine Complex) if a Joiner was found without a hammer, either in his hand or on his belt. He was sacked on the spot. Site foreman said you weren't a joiner if you didn't have a hammer in your hand, he made one bloke wear a lanyard, after he’d kicked his down the Upcast shaft 708m down to the Barnsley Seam.
He was lucky to keep his job, the coal board spent days checking the shaft for damage
