To hold a caravan rally you have to get planning permission from the local authority but the Caravan Club etc are granted some leeway to avoid all the paperwork, you can also get Caravan Club permisiion to open a camp site but it can only hold 5 vans.

Right but that makes no mention of pulling up in a layby and getting your head down.
Considering the amount of lorry drivers getting there heads down around here nightly I find it unlikely that it's illegal.
Trespassing is a different matter.

Moved quite a few of them with the Hiab from the wind farms by Kennacraig.

Probably MacNaughton's, they have quite a few tracked machines or possibly Mellex.

wild camping is not caravanning.
if you park a caravan up, you are squatting, and have to be evicted via court.

any itinerant tarmac engineer will know all the ins and out of every law.

not the same thing as setting up a tent - afaik!

Doesn't bother me in the slightest.
Used to overnight in Cornwall regularly when I was living in South Moulton and working down there.
Great truck stop down near redruth. Smokey Joe's.
Stopped there a lot for decent grub and a bay for the night.

That article says it is...Police may turn a blind eye to the trucks but I bet if the lay by was all campers they would make them move

Plus........When youve paid about £100 grand for a camper why would you want to doss down between a few artics or save £15 from not paying a campsite

Nope. Still see no mention of overnighting o. Laybys In Your article.

When I was touring about in the van the last thing I wanted was to spend time around other people.
Cornwall and Devon were great for it. Plenty of decent off road laybys.
When. I drove away early doors no one would have known I'd been there. Leave nothing behind.

Carry on to the next days adventure and worry about where to kip later

Met George MacNaughton a couple of years ago on a 25 metre phone mast install in the forest near Kilmartin.

Contractors had put a pad down for me to stand my Hiab unit that weighs 20 ton on, I’m 13 stone and I sank when I walked on it . George came up to survey the site and asked me what I needed. I then moved up to the forest at Barcaldine, above Oban, to do another mast install, came back 3 days later to find exactly what I’d asked for. Superb job from a great company, and George struck me as the kind of boss I could happily work for.

Much rather be pulled up somewhere on exmoor or Dartmoor eating my Indian takeout from the last decent town

They will nip along at 60mph but they guzzle fuel, our mog working local with big chipper up its chuff will get though 200ltrs of fuel a day. If you need one there is nothing quite like it, if you only want one the marriage wont last long

Bit late now but wouldn't box section be better than I beams? I thought I beams tended to twist and therefore require quite a lot of bracing.

Having said that most of the big trailers are C section if I recall - but then again chassis tend to be box section...

Each to their own, but I’ve never understood people who buy a fully loaded campervan then spend their holidays parked amongst identical units all doing the same . Me and the previous Mrs 4String had some fantastic adventures in our motorhome, and very rarely did we stay on a formal campsite.

When we first had one at work we almost had a fist fight as to who was driving it first I was so disappointed with it

The former owner at the time said stick to your defenders lads. We use them as weights to straight our winch wire... still makes me smile when I think about it

My 520 V8 Scania uses less on a North Yorkshire to Glasgow round trip, fully freighted.

Was at the SALTEX show at Windsor about 10 years ago with my youngest son, 21 years old and he’d just started out as a self-employed tree surgeon. He sits in the cab of a Unimog on display, salesman comes up and says would we like him to bring one round for a test drive?
