Wasn’t Tesla developing one?
Maybe they should put the trucks on the rail system,
If the rail system is electrified, they can even charge them, as they head north or south,
Last time I was in Hungary, it was not unusual to see a huge line of 40T trucks on a train.
It's been puzzling me for a while that we don't do more of this sort of thing. To say that the railways were invented in this country we really haven't used them to anything like their potential.
We seem to have an aversion to mixing passengers and goods - other countries will happily tag a goods wagon onto the back of the next train heading in the right direction. All it takes is a little logistical planning and that's hardly a new idea.
I can drive my car onto a train at one end of the channel tunnel and drive it off again at the other end - why can't I drive it onto a train in Manchester and back off again in Glasgow or Edinburgh? (or London if I develop masochistic tendancies). Even if you can only get to a few major hubs the number of miles driven by cars, vans and trucks could be cut dramatically. If those vehicles are EV's then yes it should be possible to charge them whilst they are moving at 70+mph and the driver is having a nap.
Surely these sorts of uses would increase revenue for the rail system and allow for some real investment and expansion. We've already got a proven way to make the trains pretty green by electrifying them (OK the power generation isn't always the cleanest but the economies of scale mean even if it's fossil fuelled it's many orders of magnitude better than individual car engines over the same distance). Then we could put the branch lines back and get to the point where cars and vans are only sensible for the last few miles of each journey.
