I’ve been in the market for a decent pillar drill since we moved 3 years ago and downsized the house/garage/etc. Most of my stuff went up on the farm, where is still is today and I do still have access to it whenever I want. Having 90% of the tools you’d ever really need up there it’s great, the other bits and pieces I can throw in the pick up or van and crack on in the middle of a field, but sadly jobs aren’t always that easy.
More and more I’ve found myself needing access to a better pillar drill while at home working on various projects. The little bench mounted drill I saved from my Grandads isn’t much use at all, it’ll stall at any opportunity and precision isn’t a word in its vocabulary, there’s far too much play in the quill.
I’d like something with variable speed, which leans me towards 3 phase and a VFD.
A quick browse on eBay turns up a lot of Draper, Sealey and Lumberjack - which I’ve not heard of before. New would be ideal as I’d know it’s history and it wouldn’t need much work to get it in to a running state, although a used machine certainly wouldn’t be out of the question.
Does anyone have an opinion on the above named makes?
I’m also looking in to Meddings and Ajax units too, which are few and far between.
