Stuff you have made today

Among other things, I used to make vacuum formed plastic holsters for metal detecting trowels (made my own vacuum former). I then decided I wanted to try making some leather stuff (I had no idea what), so copied a Mexican double loop holster out of a book. I stuck it on ebay, and it sold.

That was it, haven’t stopped since. It’s not the biggest business in the world, but it pays the bills, and I enjoy making them. Especially the personalised ones, as they are much more of a challenge to design and make.

In my defence about needing to get out more elsewhere , today I.......

1) Did 2 x loads of washing [I save it up to make it worthwhile putting the machine on, also until the weather cooperates - tumble driers are dear to run.....]

2) washed the car

3) finished a horseshoe crab


4) Wire brushed some more spanners - I've been doing them in small batches so that I don't sicken myself, and also get a chance to see what's what. Some decent old ones as you'd expect + box and bike spanners.
Also these which are yet to be cleaned but for a bit of fun, name there uses [a couple are really obvious]
Counterclockwise a) a wood drill for use in a hand drill which will be on its way to @The_Yellow_Ardvark [assuming he wants it] It's more like a gouge than a drill, but not particularly sharp? b) this one has MJ 68 MLY stamped on it c) has "Dom brake adjuster" stamped on it [so obvious ] d) no markings of any kind?



4) Cleaned out and checked my small water feature after Winter. All OK and the pump has survived the frosts. I'm going to run some dilute breach through it tomorrow

5) Effected an introduction to a new neighbour who's just in the course on moving in - I heard hammering and offered help if needed with any jobs - didn't linger but the offer's there now.

6) Read for a while in the sun

7) Shared a lager with another neighbour and blethered for a while

8) Planned and prepared tea

Think that's about it - who said men can't multitask?

Tomorrow has grass cutting and strimming pencilled in as a starter for 10.

Made mine out of some wood, an old hoover, a spare George Forman grill, and a foldaway picnic table. It took A4 sized plastic, and was never more than a temporary construction, until the hubby built me a ‘proper’ one (never happened, bless him ).

The former lasted almost 4 years, and its demise was timed perfectly with me moving onto leatherwork.

Anything over A4 sized plastic sheets really starts to needs vacuum air tanks to give consistent results, but they are a very handy bit of kit to have in a corner somewhere.

You’d enjoy building one, what pistol do you have.

That would easily fit a small former. You could keep it simple and just have a bit of edging around the plastic, and a spring clip on the back, and Bob’s your auntie.

Or you could go more tarty. I made this for a chap in Ireland for his Colt 1911.

Picked up a m class extractor from a car boot a few weeks back for a score.

No pto and finding something off the shelf for 110v was a headache.
Ended up with an rf relay. Good for 30amps and input power between 90-240v
Got in the guts and find a perfect spot right next to the cable entry so spliced it in.

Works flawlessly from the other side of the garden.
Better than a pto as swapping tools is just a matter of swapping the hoover pipe then hitting remote.
Just need to sort the pipe out now.

That's very interesting, my brother in law (in the Philippines) has a Rock Island 1911 and I'd like to give him a nice holster and a belt. He takes care of the house while I'm away. Can I pm you mrsbruce?

I had a tanfoglio 1911 in .45acp, until the coppers decided they did not want to licence it anymore. Loved it, the 1911 is a true design classic, no wonder the americans love them.

Not on my plan today, but the sun was out, the iced drinks were very cold.



This did not yield as much usable wood as I hoped.
Enough for the lower seat base, but no were near enough for the back rest. So a rummaged in my rubbish pile and I found something useful.



I have welded extra fixing attachments to this frame work.



M5 screws, 5 coats of Danish oil and it is ready. The frames are a bit warped, but it is still a decent seat.

Todays plan was this.

I have ordered a new blade and that will be fitted when it arrives.

The metal parts were dipped into hot caustic soda, after the lantern. Then boiled up in citric acid.
Wire brushed cleaned and clear coated.



A break along the grain. But it is a old break, full of animal glue and worn, So it was never going to be a clamp and glue.



I planed both ends flat and using a beech off cut made a infill. Using 4mm dowels it is fitted and glued in a custom made clamp and pressure applied with sliding wedges. Then shaped, you will never hide the repair fully, but with stain and varnish it will be hard to spot.

Its a Russian Skif Antics A3000 in .177. Heavy trigger, but very accurate, co2 with 28shot mag.

By the time I was 16 I’d had shots with black powder revolvers, S&W revolvers, and a 45 Gov. and was looking at getting a Star Model BM. Reason been they were cheaper (1977ish) and easier to port and convert the safety to lefthand, than the more costly 1911 Colt. The Star was a smaller gun as well; the 1911 is a large in comparison
But life got in the way, and then the idiot in Dunblane put an end to it

Today I cut some bits out of 8mm steel for a guy that goes by the name of Snack Beard the Yoon or something like that

I cut the holes undersize and will mill out to final size on the Chiron.
