Caustic soda.

I have a question about hot caustic soda.



Simply put.

I want to remove paint and crud from a metal lantern.



But there is a sheet of 3mm glass I can not remove, yet.



If I place the lantern into the hot caustic, will it affect the glass?

Don't know about the glass, but make sure the metal isn't aluminum.

Personally I'd be looking to getting some methylene chloride base paint stripper.

But bady restored, that's why I want to remove paint before I rebuild/restore it.

Beside there are a few blind areas I need to remove paint before I de rust with citric acid.

Well it seams to be working.

It worked.

150g to 5lts of water and heated to 40Deg C.

Same mix, cooler temp through.

After the first attempt I used a "Scotch-Brite" pad to remove the loose and crinkled paint. The soot was stubborn, but a filr card had to gone.

Round two. Had all the remaining paint gone. Again a "Scoych_brite" pad was used to get into all the nooks.

Then it was dried using a Hot air gun. That drone all moisture from the folds. Plus some old fuel.

It has been given a coat of primmer to keep rust at bay.

Sodium hydroxide won't touch glass unless it's molten, at around 320 degrees.

This. We use a lot of caustic soda in processes at work, up to 46% IIRC, hot, and all the tanks used to have level sightglasses on - just regular glass is fine. We had a devil of a job trying to replace them with non-glass ones though - the plastic kept turning milky.
