@slim_boy_fat Does your last have any government markings on it. Broad Arrow, stock numbers etc?
If it does, it may of been broken to render it useless, as it was earmarked for disposal through scraping.
Breaking it was and still is a common method to make a item what may have a value out side the government set up.

I’ve been needing a few things to finish a couple of projects. A new hose for my hut hoover, some wood for garden edging, and some hut shelves, and a couple of bits of ply for lining a bit of the hut.
Being a lovely day, I took myself off to a couple of fly tipping areas near me (hate fly tippers, so I see it as my civic duty to remove odds and bods). The gods were smiling, and I collected one old hoover plus hose, wood for edging, a solidly made child’s shelving unit (lovely shade of pink), and four pieces of bathroom wall sheeting stuff (whatever it’s called), which is even better than plywood.
I think I dun good, but was surprised at how many plastic kiddies toys had been dumped by someone. Broke my heart to leave them behind.

You did good.
Fly tippers are a bane.
But I can not leave good toys behind, I will collect them. I will wash them and give them to a few charity shops I favour to support. What they can't use, they have connections to ensure they do.

Thats OK until someone takes a photo of your car numberplate, and you get prosecuted for dumping it.

That has always worried me a little bit, but since these areas are public, my car stopped there is not illegal.
There again, if I came across a name and or address in the rubbish, I would have no compunction in handing it over, along with pictures of said rubbish. As I said, hate ffly tippers.

But a wise word. If you do find any form of ID, do not remove anything.
Same if it looks "To good to be dumped" leave and make like Monty python. Run away. It may be "Hot" or a trapped to catch people.

Today's road trip netted me an empty Albee argon bottle from @Hood (who was also kind enough to give me some aluminium to play with) and also an 1300 x 850mm 0.5" plate from Brown & Tawse in Dundee; incredibly they didn't want anything for it! Cameron, the salesmen with whom I dealt, just told me tell people what a great company they are; I'll certainly be getting whatever else I need for this new welding table from them for sure. It was from their 'offcuts' area and the foreman there even trimmed it down a bit for me and helped me get it in the back of the car. I may have bitten off more than I can chew as it weighs 110kg... so whatever structure I make for it will be wheeled. Stopped off elsewhere in Dundee to exchange the bottle for a full one.
Also waiting for me at home was a new 6" bench grinder for tungsten and metalworking paraphernalia sharpening; I do have another grinder but that is fitted with CBN wheels and reserved purely for sharpening woodturning tools - don't want to ruin the rather expensive CBN wheels.
