Really thick washers

Hi all,
One of my bread and butter jobs requires some (approx) 30 x 10mm round small discs, which I drill 8mm holes through the centre of to take a rivet. Basically they're hinges in some forged/fabbed tongs I make for a bloke. The arms of the tongs are made from 10mm round bar, hence the hinges needing to be 10mm thick. I currently use a Starrtet type holesaw to drill out a 30mm slug from a bit of 10mm plate, then up the arbor hole from 6mm to 8mm to take a rivet. Needless to say it needs 2 of these bad boys per pair of hinges.
Can anyone recommend a pre-made thick washer type jobbie that'd save me this drilling time? I basically want something like a collar, but one that's not split or hasn't got a grub screw hole in it.

They could easily be parted off from a piece of 30mm bar after drilling the hole, of course.

Get the lazer cut they will be cheap as chips

Possibly a couple of photos of your item from all the angles would help describe it better and give members an idea of its design. That would no doubt help your effort.

Jobs like that are how I justify keeping the capstan lathe. not that I've used it yet.


Not the first occasion you could do with a lathe MR Smith. Worth considering.

Some of these thick wall tubes are available, I keep a few sizes but no 30mm, there is a 26mm with 10mm bore here and that came from Acton Bright http://www.actonbrightsteel.co.uk/ . If your size is available you could then just rasher them off on a cold saw as and when.

Thanks for the ideas folks. I did try slicing off 10mm discs from 30mm bar and then drilling them (as I don't yet have a lathe) but found that method to be more time consuming than the holesaw method. Yeah a lathe would be a good tool for my armourery at some point @eLuSiVeMiTe
I've never had anything lazer cut before, can anyone recommend me a firm that'll be willing to take on small jobs like this? If I Google lazer cutters I'll just spend all day looking through hundreds of results and not really know who's any good or who's better on prices.

the only problem/thing I can see with the lazer cutting is they dont like cutting holes smaller in diameter than the thickness of the material 8mm hole in 10mm may be a poblem

Ref the laser, could you stack 2x 5mm washers?

Or, could you carry on as you are but use 6mm rivets? That would save one operation.

There is not just laser, water jet and plasma are options, but I would guess any professional would source them from a machine shop with a capstan lathe. Faffing about on a centre lathe is almost as slow as the holesaw method.

Yup.

Picked up a capstan tailstock and lever cross slide for my lathes for that reason.

If you get some 30mm round bar I’d be happy to drill it out in the lathe for you.
Then all it needs is slicing off either with your monster bandsaw, or the smaller one that you sold me.
I’m not far from you, and we could have a good old yarn and a cuppa while we do the biz.
No money involved- just bring some biscuits!

Waterjet should walk that... I've had 4mm holes cut through 30mm aluminium in the past .... you might need to go slightly smaller and clean up with a drill or reamer but given the application i would think it would be adequate

That's still an extra process similar to drilling, which is what the OP is trying to avoid.
