The other day I got this Abrafile saw. For a few pounds.
I knew the handle had 2 worm holes in it, I planed to replace it. What I didn't know the frame was cracked.



The handle was not as bad as it could of been. The worm was old and not active. But It was treated as a precaution.

The frame had some poor chrome plating, more flake than coat. But as I was cleaning it up the crack, in the fixed blade end let go and it broke into two.
Oh Bother. A quick call to a friend and a meet up was arranged. The frame is imperial and my friend had some scrap round bar. So armed with folding money, coffee and Hob Nobs I set out.
Long story short. A bar was bent into a replacement frame. Then the old was cut clean and the new cut to suit. Turned on a lathe to give a step. Then he TIG the 2 parts up.



You can just see the heat bloom on the frame before I cleaned it up.



I know I could of gone back to the place I got it from and got either my money back or a replacement. But were is the fun in that.

It’s 1mm steel roughly shaped with a bossing mallet and sand bag then ran through the shrinker you help tip the edges up.
After a bit more sand bag action I moved to a stake dolly and planishing hammer to smooth out the lumps and then onto the slapper to further refine the surface.

I’ve still got to add a wire edge and smooth out some hammer marks but it’ll do for a kids toy.

Nothing major but, I was pleased with it. I made an adjustable brace for the rad on my Disco. Normally it would bolt on to the stock intercooler and then to the car but as mine has an after market intercooler on there was nowhere for it to bolt to. So i made a little bracket out of some Ali chequer i had in the scrap bin and used some stainless threaded bar.

Spent most of today making this battery carrier for my truck

And doing my bit to save the planet I recycled and used some of the old qualcast lawnmower.

Started the rebuilt 850 in earnest to see what the exhaust sounded like...

The phone tends to pick up the treble more than anything and doesn't really give much of an idea what it sounds like. It's a fair bit bassier than this, without being loud.
The alarming rattles are things bouncing around on the worktop, nothing terminal in the engine.

I like the Mk2, what did you use to mark the pattern? I'm assuming you used a plasma, was that done freehand or cnc?

Finally got a day decent [and calm] enough to get the diesel heater baffle welded up outside, and painted.

Another tick on the 'projects to forget now' list - although one has been replaced by two, a bench press and [thanks to @gaz1 ] a cutter/grinder. Never ending this..........

Wrong!! It seems that while the baffle will prevent strong wind 'blowback', what it doesn't do is stop the exhaust heating it up to such a degree that you can't hold your hand on it.

Essentially, all I've done it transfer the problem of heat against bare wood from the interior to the outside.

Plan B. I'm going to rob the pad/sheet of stuff from the end of the ironing board and make a 'gasket' to fit between the baffle & the wood.

Cool. Odd way of over-complicating a key but cool nonetheless.

Most old vehicles that have a taper fit hubs to half shafts have the key at the same angle as the taper in my experience, the key is square, so not unusual back then.

It can be useful when turning a new half shaft to replace a worn one, as the bottom of the keyway will still be at the original angle, unlike the worn part.

If the key was parallel to the axis it would have to be much deeper (oblong not square) in order to present enough side area all along the taper, which would weaken both hub and shaft.
