I am accessing the loft space above the dining room from the end of the house i.e knocking a doorway through the gable of an upstairs bedroom into the roof space to use it as a decent sized storage space. Some trial drilling and some careful measurements and it all works nicely with a level threshold etc. So, 3 questions to the forum:
1. I have got just enough room to run new floor joists over the existing bottom chord of the trusses and keep a flush threshold into the bedroom. Are 6"x3" joists spanning 3410mm with 22mm chipboard suitable? Joist hangers each end into the blockwork.
2. The trusses are 75x35 in section so I have 75mm depth from the underside of the felt/battens to the underside of the rafter part of the truss. What insulation/vapour barrier etc do I need here? I will be plasterboarding and skimming the underside and i'd rather not loose any space.
3. Sketch of typical truss - they are at 600 centres and there are 7 of them. I need to cut out the vertical and the two raking ties. Where am i likely to need to put (Steel?) beams to replace?.. Ridge and half way along the rafter portion of the truss i.e where i would be cutting off the raking ties?
Thanks!
