I've read up on this before, advice from solicitors... you're not going to get off with it, and trying will just **** people off, so phone/write back and point out the mistake, wait for a new letter from them


if you don't reply to a speed camera latter it's an automatic 6 points... guess it might be the same for this?

I agree just try and do the best possible for your own outcome.

That is what got recommended to me for my little incident with speed a few years back.
But I didn't have a choice back then it was go directly to court, do not pass go, do not collect £200.

If you can get away with a speed awareness course then bonus but more than likely points at 88mph. (3 maybe 6 if they 're feeling harsh)

Only advice I can say is just put your hands up to being guilty straight away. Makes them appreciate the way your not trying to fight the system and this is what helped me keep my licence (after a short term ban) rather than a longer ban and possible licence removal.

The confusion with the 10% thing arises when somebody gets done at say for example 31mph in a 30. Thinking they shouldn’t be done lower than 33. Their actual speed was 31mph but their speedo will have been showing closer to 35 because as stated above speedos read faster than actual speed.

Where I live they've been adding 20mph limits everywhere....but the sing is very poor...I'm convinced deliberately!

My friend got done doing 88mph in a 70mph....the bill said he was very unlucky. He was on 9 points and he said they seem to single him out as others were overtaking him!

It’s not necessarily victimless if someone falls asleep at the wheel or fails to notice stationary traffic ahead in time. You are getting quite a bit more energy involved for your extra 10-12 miles an hour.

Most of the time for most people it’s fine but it’s the times somebody does something stupid it’s just that bit better that everybody is supposedly this side of 75 mph.

Certainly when I saw a jeep locking up under braking in my rear view because he wasn’t paying enough attention I was pleased he wasnt doing 10-15 more than he was.

You are getting quite a bit more energy involved for your extra 10-12 miles an hour.

Spot on...my applied maths teacher gave us an example that I never forgot....kenetic energy = 1/2 x mass x speed x speed (or something like that....I remember the speed squared bit!)

At 30pmh the speed bit is 30x30= 900
At 40mph the speed bit is 40x40= 1600

So that 10mph almost doubles the energy in an impact

The original poster mentioned that it was on a motorway doing 88 Mph, this is not speeding but keeping up with traffic !
Stop comparing apples with oranges, motorways are safe compared with busy roads in town !

totaly agree, it is victimless, if your doing 75 on an empty 4 lane motorway and you get done who is the victim? it you murdersome one or steal, knife, shoot, mug swindel etc you are violating some one else. as I said in built up areas the speed limits are there for a reason. on motorways its just a cash earner, speed cameras are ment to be a deterant, not catch peope.

its common sense that you should not be driving at an excessively differnt speed that other pepole, if everyone on the motorway is doing 90 and you are doing 90 is the safeset speed to drive at.

if everyone is doing 90 and your doing 50 on the inside lane its exstreamly dangerous, you see lorrys having to move out into the middle lane to avoid them, and on dual carriges it causes chaos.

Ninety is ok until something goes wrong, I would rather have a tyre blow out at sixty Racing about rarely shortens travel time, when my lads roar out of the gate in the morning they never get to the workplace more than a minute or two before me and I am normally in a lorry.

agree with 8oB, see this every morning, school run, 30km to the school, see the idiots screaming past, then having to force there way back in because they've left it too late. when we get to the main roundabout before the town, they're maybe 5 or 6 cars in front of me sitting in the que, so not only have they endangered thier lives, but more importantly others lives to gain what? 100 yards maybe, or less that 30 seconds over that 30km.

I liked to nip on a bit when I was younger, and when I was on my own or clear to do it, but when I have the kids in the car, I've got the sensible head on, but in reality, when you see things like that on a daily basis, you question why they (we used to ) bother to gain seconds.

I agree with the comments about it being used as a business and way to generate cash, but on the other side of the coin, there's more than enough idiots out there who create these problems for everyone else, which is difficult to justify, when it's not safe to do so.

Since habitually speeding all over the place as a young blade about town, and after two speeding tickets, I now stick to the speed limits. Helped out by active cruise in my current car, driving is noticeably less stressful. I pay attention to lane discipline and I'd rather the ******** on my rear bumper got past quickly and went forth to procreate than I held him up. Having said that, I'm not going to be intimidated if I'm doing 70 and passing an HGV doing 56 in the middle lane.

Last year, France reduced it's national speed limit on single carriageway roads to 80 kmh from 90 (50 mph from 56). Even though it is only a small difference in speed, driving at 50 is great. Less stress and anyone who wants to drive like a nutter can get past more easily as they race towards an early grave.

Prime example - Early one Sunday morning, I’m tootling along an empty motorway at about 65-70, harming no one. Car whooooores up on the outside doing an estimated 100+ (He was fast, really fast). Ok, you say, harming no one, except he suddenly realised he was about to miss his turnoff, while in the process of starting to overtake me.

His solution? He hauls his car across the front of mine, with only fairy dust between us (this is on an emoty motorway, so braking and going behind me was a sensible option IMHO). But no, he turns off the motorway, by crossing the chevrons, travels over the dead space on the offside of the turnoff, in a cloud of dust and gravel, and somehow didn’t crash.

I emerged from his (literal) cloud of dust, and I cannot remember my first thought being “victomless crime”.

Lines have to be drawn somewhere, and not always where we want them to be drawn.

Occasionally, driving slower vehicles, I've had the untrammelled joy of being stuck in the slow lane while the trucks whizz past me.
However, those slow ones were usually of a decent size and the driver's seat wasn't down at car level, so was essentially not that much different from a truck.
The worst one of the lot was a car which developed a fuel fault (a long-lost rubber gasket in the base of the tank which partially blocked the pick-up pipe) and meant I had to journey from Derby to Luton at 45 - 50mph in the inside lane of the M1. Slightly nerve-wracking, but I will say this; even though I was stuck there watching the trucks whizz past me at a heady 50 and 60mph, never once did I feel in any danger from them. Without exception, the standard of driving from those wagon-jockeys was damn good, and in return I would give them a flash when they were clear to move back in front of me.
Some of them probably thought I was some sort of auld dodderer who shouldn't be on the road, but hey, I had no choice. I'd also imagine that some of the language in the cabs was a bit fruity.

As I mentioned earlier on the unrestricted Autobahns in Germany people are driving at the same speeds as they do in the UK. I only saw 3 cars travelling faster! Just because they can travel at 150mph doesn't mean they will.
