Saddleworth Moor...again

It’s in the news again that Saddleworth Moor is burning again.

Police and Fire in attendance since 1930 last night, 26/02, with at least 30 firefighters on scene, and Police even went to the extent of closing the A62. The cause has none yet been identified.

I do recall a number of years ago there was a large scale fire on another peat moor, and the only true solution and guarantee to it being extinguished was to dig the peat out as it can smoulder for quite some time.

It's not unknown for the bottom of a broken glass bottle to act as a lens [remember as kids getting a magnifying glass and burning each other by focussing the sun's rays?] and set fire to dry undergrowth/heather etc.

Or, there's always brainless, malicious numpties who think it's bright to start these......

wonder if thats where the helo that flew over with its spotlight on at midnight was coming from. was like insta daylight

We had a dried up pond at the bottom of the garden when I was a kid.
That would spontaneously combust into life. When it did have water in it you could light the bubbles
I believe they are called "will-o' the wisp"

Still smelling the smoke in work, Mossley ,right next to the moors, its a regular thing in summer theres always patches burning not usually this early though
There are shoots that burn the heather on purpose though, to encourage young shoots that the chicks can reach thought it was that at first.

yeah happens regularly, I was driving across saddleworth moor to go the model engineering exhibition in Oldham last weekend, and was thinking how much spectacular scenery we have on our doorstep in this area. shame its going to be a bit charred arround the edges these days

they try to provide a patchwork effect, its better for the wildlife than all one stage of growth, and easier to control fires like this.

Sap is low and the higher than usual temperatures have made things tinder dry.
