I went to see @richard on Sunday just gone for a bit of tuition on steel. I hadn't really done much Tig before then and what I had done I couldn't really critique as to be perfectly honest I didn't know whether what I was doing was right or wrong.
So it turns out I thought my main issue was travel speed and it was though not how I thought. I thought I was too slow and was cooking the base metal, turns out I was too fast. Who'd have thought it eh.
Other issues were too much gas flow, amperage too low for the travel speed etc.
Well happily it was all sorted out which I knew it would be. We started on 3mm plate so Richard could see what was going on and by the end of the day we'd progressed onto some stainless tubing of varying wall thickness and OD being joined to 3mm plate.
So just wanted to add a big thank you to Richard, a thoroughly nice guy who genuinely knows his subject and manages to get it across in a very easy to understand format, which from my own experience of teaching people complex subjects at work isn't always the easiest thing to do. All I need to do now is practice practice and practice some more.
