Does any one know what the little wheel on the tip of a glass cutter is made off?

I don't know but I reckon silver steel hardened and tempered to light straw would do. Or perhaps forget the tempering.

Just hardened steel I think, nothing overly fancy. You can buy them for next to nothing...

I’ve had a look on eBay and you can get a cutter for not very much.

Too messy and the water will wreck the labels.

Glass cutter is very simple to use. Score bottle, heat up score line with candle flame, then dunk up to score line in ice cold water.

Quick and simple, works every time

I've got one, albeit a very cheap and old one which I saved from the bin to cut glass but it always seems to chip it no matter how careful I am.

It was in the bin because my dad hadn't used for about 15 years.

You can cut bottles by wrapping a string around them with paraffin on, setting light to it & when at the right temperature, dipping in water. If you get it right the thermal shock will cut it instantly. I haven’t done it for donkeys years, but was shown it as a child, tried it & proved it works.

Yep seen that too. I’ve tried it by painting string with clear nail varnish and allowing to dry first

I’ve got an idea to cut the bottom off some JD bottles that I have to make lamps with.

Now that I’ve just ordered the cutter I’ve come across some threaded bungs that tighten into the neck of the bottle, but will require a 10mm hole to be drilled. This gives me some more options
