A mates dad has been playing in the garage this week and when we popped round he had made a donkey saw from bits and pieces he had knocking about, It is still in raw form but had to snap a cheeky pic.

He's probably still using real lead oxide from the 50s . I like the machine, proper shed engineering. The motor end needs a cover though or metal dust is going to kill it eventually.

That looks better than the factory ones! And maybe lighter, the rigidity comes from design not absurdly heavy iron castings..
Ball bearings on the con rod as well. I love it.

He is over 70 does give all his work a good coat of red oxide and he has plenty of stuff going back to the 50's but i think he ran out of the real red oxide a few years back so he uses the screwfix no nonsense red oxide now same as i do, I hope it is still the same as they have changed the tin recently.

Myfordboy used to sell plans to his version. I think they were a tenner, didn't look too far off this...I have the drawings but not the machine, in the end it was cheaper to buy a Rapidor than build one

I'm wondering why he needed the intermediate pulley on the pillow bearings? Possibly the pic doesn't show the alignment [or the motor pulley size etc], but it looks like if he'd relocated the motor just a little bit the drive could have gone straight to the 'main' one at top right?

That's not to detract from the job, better than I could have come up with....

Nicely done, but that vice will be a pain to use with the fine thread, he'll be winding it for ages to go from large to small, etc.

I'd hazard a guess the cordless drill in the picture will be used with a socket on for winding the vice in and out.

the only problem I can see is the gearing and size of the pulleys. they only run at 80rpm I have a 3inch pulley on motor to a 6inch on countershaft that has a 3inch attached then to a ten inch pulley on the crankshaft. . that looks nowhere near the size if the motor is 1400 rpm I can measure pulleys exactly of mine if you want them

He has a few things he has made over the years, I will try and snap a few pics..and i think he will have an old cordless for winding the vice as he has a few knocking about... The tape on the hammers is a for telling the tools are his, He used to work in at a welding place and things go missing ..

Very similar in design to my warco donkey saw.


Didn't need the counter pulley though. Driving wheel was geared down.

It'd be great to see a video of this in action if possible once it's in position and up and running.

Remember the fascination seeing the donkey saw running back at school metalwork.

I hope it is still the same as they have changed the tin recently.

I don't find the new stuff as good as the previous no nonsense, it's way too thin and doesn't stick as well I find.

I should be back round his place this week so i will try and get a running picture,
and typical that the red oxide i prefer to use is now not as good, looks like i need to find a new supply.
