Recommendations for an all in one printer

Hi all, looking to replace our Canon Pixma which, while it works fine, appears to be getting worse at connecting to our WiFi network, so if possible I'd like the following;

1. All in one printer with photocopier style scanner tray (i.e. lift up the lid and plonk the item to be copied on it).
2. MUST HAVE ETHERNET CONNECTION FACILITY!!! I cannot emphasise this too much as we've spent hours running about switching router/printer off and on. I'd just connect the bloody thing to the PC upstairs via USB but Mrs Browser likes to print from the laptop downstairs, and daughter now prints from her MacBook so we need the flexibility.
3. Auto-duplexing would be fab too.
4. If it didn't outweigh an aircraft carrier and cost the national debt of Liberia to buy/run this would also be nice

HP 425 MFP and the HP 426MFP.

I've got dozens of these in service currently. All used by ham fisted windscreen fitters and are living to tell the tale quite well.

Scan, Fax, Print, Email All in one. Would recommend

I have to have an epson for work. It (was) a 500 quid printer, and ive just got a repair quote on it for £248 ex vat : ( Sadly, ill have to pay it, as i cant replace it with a current offering, and the epson heads work in a different way to the Canon ones...

...which brings me onto Canon. I had a cheap canon last me the best part of 20 years. Its recently broken, and ill replace it with another Canon. If i did not have to have an Epson for work, i wouldnt touch them with your barge pole.

Epsons are great (in context!) if you want to use some sort of pigment based ink - eg printing jobs for sale where the maintenance isnt as much of a concern, but if you just want a printer, dont bother with them.

Ive got the same unit, great for my little home office.

I realy like the ability to scan and send to email straight from the printer

Cano have been the mainstay engines for lasers and printers for decades. Epson were ok in the dot matrix days but when I was in the service trade, every Epson we sold had a problem with cartridges and heads. You ended up emptying a set of cartridges when cleaning the heads and then ended up replacing the heads and cartridges again.

With Canon, the head is in with the cartridge ink and it's easy to eliminate problems and they are refillable too. The Epson have a droplet counter chip to stop you refilling them unless you zero the chip.

Manufacturers actually make a loss on the printer but make up for it in cartridge sales. There was a small colour laser printer that cost more to replace the cartridges than the original cost of the printer but the ploy was that you usually only replaced one colour ata a time so hopefully you didn't notice the cost.

If you do a lot of printing there are large tank adaptions that can be fitted.

I use a Brother MFC 6720 A3 multi functions
it has 2 trays, I have A3 in one and A4 in the other.
Used pretty much daily for last 3 years and not let me down.
I use compatible inks , and the set of 4 is less than a tenner

I would agree to this owning a wifi printer that has a mind of its own, but i also own a Samsung laser that is fantastic but about once a week disappears from the network, i have given up working up why.
Also have 2 brother A3 MFD both work 100% reliable as regards wired and wireless connection.
No personal connection but have recently had excellent service from printerland.

you can get 4 colour lasers. not sure if they're up to photo quality, guessing not?, but for charts/diagrams they're excellent.

also, I think of the "all in one" printers like the dvd+TV Combos. only worth buying if you *desperately* need the room.
you pay a premium for the joy of throwing away a complete system if one part breaks. and each part tends not to be as good, or cheap, as individual components.

in other words:
buy a separate scanner to the printer if you have the room.
buy a laser printer unless you need photo quality.
consider photo printing services unless you need photos *now*, or you're printing lots of them every month.

ex-gf had an all in one which she used a couple of times a month. the inks were constantly drying out and needing replacement - at £40 a time! - every month. worked out at about £10 per A4 photo!

watch out for the cashback offers - some of the more expensive printers can be cheaper than the cheap ones with the offers on. I have an HP all in one laser (an MFP 477dnw) and it is a great printer and scanner, colour and cheap to run. If you want to print photos an inkjet will make a much better job but are a bit more to run and you need to use them regularly or they tend to block up.

I too have gone for a mono laser printer - and never looked back.

Despite what has already being said colour laser printers are very capable of producing photo quality. It's all down to what paper stock is used. If you print on an ultra white paper, Xerox colourtech gloss for example will produce superb results. A lot of high end printers are laser with comparable resolution to small devices of around 600x600 dpi. The main difference is speed and ability to print on oversize A3 .Added benefit are the prints are more UV stable, water proof and more durable.
The two machines above from printer land are worth looking at. Canon and HP are both very good and a lot of the laser machines share the same print engines. Lexmark are also very good, some have the benefit of using old style (but more reliable and durable) fuser rollers rather than fixing films.
Appart from drum/dev toner replacements these should go for at least 100 thousand A4 prints before the rest of the engine needs service.

What a hateful situation. Spending money on somthing you know is a bit rubbish but having to do it anyway (as I say, the high UV absorbant ink I use won't work in canon printers)

It's a 6 colour printer. I'll fill every tank up with black ink too....

Again, if it were a choice, I wouldn't buy an Epson.

not that i used copy units that much as i do use them at work no matter hiow much you spend there all near carp

as above lazer for black printing never go back even if you dont use it for a month powers on heats up and prints

my 4 colour laser was like that: only used it for shop posters, however - not photos.
