I've just read the recent thread about painting an engine block, but not much info on prepping it. I'm contemplating painting a Yanmar marine diesel on which the paint is not too bad, but black and that is not helpful for my installation, I'm thinking white or yellow to improve visibility in the engine compartment. The condition of the paint can be seen a but in the photos ( I know the 3TNV20 is an industrial engine - it drove a compressor on a dive boat and has been marinised so is effectively a 3YM20 IMO).
I could just degrease it - In the old days I used gunk, but the environmental stuff on the side puts me off. What options now?
Then what would be a good coating to go over existing factory paint? Prime & topcoat or all in one?
I could blast it and have crushed glass media but not looking to buy any other - any tips here?
Presumably degrease first even if not too oily?
Obviously blank everything off, but with what to withstand blasting?
Would I be looking to just key the factory paint where good?
Lower cost is good. I can't run to epoxy and top-end solutions and would rather brush paint than rattle can as I think you get a thicker, more reliable coating.
Many thanks
