i sold mine on here for 120.00 what i paid for it but some believe they are worth a fortune on older lathes

myford 7 holds there price expect more to pay 400.00+ up to 1000.00

myford 10 you can pick up for around 600.00

You could well be right - and even I know that'd be too much.
I'd be better off with a Kerry from Sunderland but that's not likely right now.

I really do not get this fascination with myfords, yes there neat, small and hold their price. But as lathes go, they are still just a small lathe. A worn one is awful. A good one the prices are eye watering. Ive had two, good enough, but too small, last one Ive been promised back, from his son, once he cant use it anymore.

If you have the space buy a proper sized machine. With small machines youll spend half your time working out how to overcome their inadequacies.

That was my problem, lack of. That, and lathes of any size within reasonable striking distance tend to be like hens' teeth. I looked for a couple of years for something suitable, but what appeared locally[ish] was usually 3-phase or simply too big and heavy to transport and get round the house, up a steep garden slope and into my 14' x 10' shed.

So the Myford Tri-Leva was about as good as it got, that and I got a great deal from @MattH on it. I could definitely sell it on up here now if I wanted [I don't ] and make a decent profit, as they command a higher price, being the rarest of the ML7s.

Actually facebook market place, often has a fair selection of useful tools. There actually a fair selection of lathes and a few myfords. Well worth a surf if your in the market.

I USED to think that as well. I had a HobbyMat MD65 many years ago - hated it - too small to do anything I thought. Then I saw the work one of the members on here was doing with it. And then I started watching Clickspring's videos on Youtube - you just need to pick the right projects for a smaller lathe.

I now have 2 lathes - an Emcomat 7 which is small but very nice - and a Colchester Triumph - definitely little and large!

But you only need 1, anything you can do on the little one can be done on the big one. That was my point. It all depends what you want to do.

But trying putting a trailer axle, or a prop shaft in A myford. It just doest work. Or machining a drum brake while still in the wheel rim. Im not saying bigger is best, but it does give you more options.

its not just space with the myfords its also what you need with them

friends to go collect them just 1 for the myford compared to bigger machines
some like them in cellers due to not having a garage or a shed
dont have to make doorways widder to get them in
no trailer needed to collect them but does help some times if its got a lathe stand with it

To be fair to them, they can go where the big ones cant. My father in law has an ML7 and stand in a shed with a floating wooden floor, he spent 3 hours leveling it all one night proud as punch, until he stood back and the whole lathe and stand leaned forward with him. He was a bit perturbed to say the least.

I think it's like 3ph tools used to be. Cheap inverters have levelled things a bit, but it used to be that the same tool in 3ph would be worth a fraction of its 1ph equivalent, simply as the demand was so much less.

As noted, a pocket size lathe may be too small for so many jobs, but it still has massive market appeal, as someone who knows very little can think "I'd like a lathe" and just go buy one. They done need an engine crane to lift it out of the trailer. They don't need rollers, crow bars, etc.etc. They just need to turn up at the sellers house with a disproportionately large bundle of cash and an estate car. And of course, evreyone has heard of myford, so that just stokes the fire further.

I guess the bottom line is, if you just have a timber floored shed, and an estate car, then you are limited, regardless as to if a bigger lathe would be better. But, if you don't have those restrictions, then why go for one that everyone who *does* have those restrictions is competing for?

My own lathe is a smart and brown model m. Cost me £181 off eBay with a load of attatchments that did not fit / were not for the lathe. I resold the useless (to me) bits for £180...

It's a nice little lathe. Sure it won't fit in the back of an estate car, but it's footprint is still small. There are bargains to be had, but probably not with the "myford" name?

Something else to consider is that whilst a large lathe can hold and turn a small part it might not (probably won't) have a high enough spindle speed to do it properly. No point trying to machine a part a few mm diameter if your top speed on the lathe is 600rpm.

I wouldn't fancy clock making on a big old lathe!

And there very capable lathes too.
Did well on that price. Paid 230 for my mk1

I'll just have to free up some space, find a bit more cash, and wait.

Can't fault the logic. Patience will pay off.
Set up some ebay and gumtree email notifications and keep eyes on fb marketplace rather than local selling pages.
