Cheers Peter, the cable is definitely smoother that the old one, even with the old one off the car it is stiff to move the inner compared to the new one. My next move is to check the cable is seated/clipped everywhere as per the old one, then have a looksee that I've not disturbed anything and finally to drop the oil to see if anything is chewed up in the box.
Just wondering... I'm fairly sure the noise is road speed dependant rather than engine which make me lean towards gearbox probs ? I'll have another drive in it tomorrow and double check.
Looking on Eurocarparts it's £150 for a LUK clutch kit (pressure + clutch + bearing)
No just forward gears until I replaced the clutch cable.
150 for a clutch + 120 for 2nd hand box, I should have left the missus sat there and called breakdown rather than being clever and driving it home
No, the wife was driving and she says she was downshifting for a corner when it went. The plastic bit on the end that hooks onto the clutch pedal had broken.
You're right, even though this cable has the same type of adjuster as the cable on FIL's berlingo it doesn't have a plastic retaining piece that's only to be removed after installation that that had.
In hindsight I should have removed them, the aircon has never worked anyway! 
The Haynes manual was totally useless doing this job, it basically tells you to disconnect the cable at both ends, fit new cable being sure to follow the route of the old one and make sure it's clipped in place... Well duh, If I couldn't work that out I'm clearly to dumb to change a cable anyway.Like you I used an online guide to fit my cable, the haynes manual was useless. I like your solution for the aircon pipes, I left mine in but they now have extra bends!
I tried that several times but it wouldn't do it.
Yeah the bushings have seen better days but to do them both means pulling the box off, that can wait until I can get it in my garage or the weather improves. For now I've had enough lying on my back outside in the wind and rain.
Noise has gone, hopefully I haven't damaged anything by driving it with the clutch effectively partly pressed in all the time.
Two gallons of petrol and get someone else to hold the matchUpdate ! It's started knocking again. So I bit the bullet and ordered a clutch from Euro and got the correct gearbox for the engine off ebay 2nd hand.
Had a lovely weekend removing the old gearbox & clutch, then fitting the 2nd hand gearbox and new clutch, took it for a test drive on Sunday night and all seemed well. I'm a bit hard of hearing so I get the missus to drive it on Monday and she reports back that it's knocking again.

So current state of play is... With a different gearbox and a brand new clutch (friction plate, pressure plate & thrust bearing) it's back to knocking. It's not as loud as it was before the clutch/gearbox swap, it knocks worse on the overrun, it's worse in gear than out of gear, it still knocks coasting down a hill in neutral and the engine stopped.
The oil out of the original gearbox was spotless. The clutch I took off was worn but still serviceable and I can't see any problems with it.
Suggestions apart from a gallon of petrol and a match ?
Cv's usually only knock when cornering, and can be ignored for ages before they become a real problem.
Thanks Hugh for a straight reply. I'll have a look at the intermediate bearing but I suspect it's not loose in the mount, it was hard enough to get it out of the mount when I removed the shaft to do the gearbox.
You picture it driving round North Africa with the doors hanging off, and if it doesn't look that bad chances are it's still good to go
old Peugeots are very reliable and simple things. My family have run 404, 305, 205, 405 and they've all been manky old unmaintained dogs of things but they never left us stranded.
