SDS drill removal.

Hi all,
Client asked me to extract the drill bit from a Titan hammer/braker drill. Finally made up a jig and used the splitter ram from the bodywork kit, quite a lot of force needed. The end of the drill bit had mushroomed enough to stop it coming out. Seems he had drilled a lot of 20mm holes without removing it. So I ground the swelling off and told him to keep an eye on it. That was 6months ago.
So, after I had installed a refurbished set of old gates, he gives me another drill, a new Kawasaki, with the same problem. It belonged to his daughters, who run a little business renovating and gardening. This came out a bit quicker, as I knew the problem and had the jig.
I have used SDS for 20+ years and never had a similar problem. Has anybody else?

Never. But I use decent sds bits and I'm regularly swapping out.

Um, yes. Once in an Erbaur(?) or Titan Screwfix cheapy bought to do one job years ago.

Very long 22mm bit. A cheap one from Lidl I think. Had been in the drill for sometime and used for many holes.

I gave up and Freecycled the drill & bit combination!

So what was the secret of the jig?

I managed to get the locking balls out of the first drill and made up two plates with 10mm slots. These slipped over the exposed section of the drill, before it enlarged to the 20mm diam.
Packing one side, I inserted the 'teeth' of the splitting ram between the plates opposite the packing and pumped away. It gave a bit, so I increased the packing and I tried again. Several goes later, it was out. Not sure about the actual force involved, but the pump was hard work. It was out of a 10 ton kit. The size of the splitter ram and the leverage on the teeth, would make it much less than the main ram.
It seems that in both the drills, the actual contact patch is only around 6mm and formed a recess with the displaced material going sideways to form a collar.
I think that both the drills came from Brico Depot. AKA B&Q. Normally not bad quality.

Had to buy an extra long 18mm SDS for a one off job, got cheapest I could get on amazon. Used lightly in a Festool cordless SDS and noticed It was sticking/catching on removal then saw it was distorted on the end. Threw it away after the job it would no doubt have jammed eventually.

1. Failed to even see the locking balls let alone remove them
2. Making two plates - Hmm effort involved
3. Hard pumping of a 10 tonne ram I don't have.

Stick the drill bit in the vice with the chuck hard up to the jaws and use a track rod end splitter and big hammer. Get your assistant Debbie to pull the drill.

I had the opposite problem.
A 13mm hole had to be drilled through a stone wall.
I got through the inner layer of stone, but the drill wouldn't come back out.
I've still got the drill, firmly stuck in the stone, lying in the yard.

Someday, some watery bint will come along and pull it free.

Mrs. KF's grandpa was a USN Commander on the China station in the 20's, so we have a LOT of stuff from there. This model dates from the 1800s

Stick that and any other old[ish] stuff you don't want to keep for personal reasons pieces on eBay, the Chinese are buying back their 'history' and can pay what seem to us ridiculous amounts to get it back.

I know this because a pal [sadly no longer with us] put an old vase which had been converted to a lamp [not Ming iirc] to a local salesroom a few years back and couldn't believe how much it fetched. It had been brought from china by his father who was a Captain with the White Star Line [he dodged a bullet [well...iceberg] by not being in charge on the Titanic ]

You might be pleasantly surprised......

BTW, the dust is not Chinese..tho I could gloss over that

Little story... I was at a GF's house in the 60s, her father had bought a nice pair of cockerals and she asked me what I thought of them. I flipped one over to look at the marks, then put it down VERY carefully. They were Ming.
