I saw that listed on some stuff, I have been watching out for a decent cast straight edge, but it appears they need machining and scraping,

That casting is made by a member here. I have one and so does Spencer. They are easy to machine and scrape and very nicely made.

I milled mine on a Bridgeport then hand-scraped it to finish. Nice soft iron to work with.

Read the T&C in the link above and didn't think it would work for tools either tbh.
Surprisingly it does. Usually the codes they post are of no use to me.
Worth punching it in to test if you have stuff in your basket.

thanks Pete, how likely is it I could scrape to a decent finish myself, loads of time spent watching the tube suggests i will need a very flat surface, but surface plates are way outside my skill set

If you got a decent granite plate then scraping one of these in would be fairly easy. They are cast from a nice soft iron. Easy to scrape and easy to maintain.

You absolutely HAVE to mill it first, or find someone with a 12" stroke shaper.
