IKEA filing drawers

I've got a couple of these in my garage for storing screws etc. They're ok, but a bit flimsy as they're just thin folded sheet metal. For less money (or free) you can get good quality used under-desk pedestals or filing cabinets which will be sturdier and have proper drawer runners. These are widely available on ebay, facebook, gumtree etc or from office clearance places.

They used to be £25. They're very tinny, and flat packed. Fall apart if you look at them too hard

Our house has two ikea kitchens one fitted (by me) over 20yrs ago. We’ve got bedroom cabinets, office stuff, and in a bathroom. I dont recall any problems building them. They look as good as the day I fitted them.

Thats mainly down to myself and my family knowing how to open and close draws/doors without putting all your weight on it while doing so.

I have had those drawers, they are carp.
After 4 failed on Mrs TYA Ikea refunded our money and gave use a 15% discount card to use on the next visit.

I have used Ikea stuff in the past, I would say 60% has been OK and lasted well.

But the 40% of the stuff has been totally rubbish and has been a waste of my time.

Too big for me, I'm on the lookout for a 5-drawer, similar in dimensions to the Bisley job, on eBay but they're all either too far away or collection in person only [won't pack for Courier uplift].

I've got at least 6 sets of these cabinets from 3 different "generations", the older ones are far more sturdy then the modern ones, then they got a bit lighter, then lighter again.

I use some of them for consumables like grinder discs, sandpaper etc and they other are full of a lot of all my tooling for the lathe and the mill.

Despite their light weight they are more than adequate for the home workshop, for the money I'm very pleased with them. They are a handy size rather than proper filing cabinet drawers and they are far cheaper than most of the proper drawers of the same form factor, apparantly nice bisley drawers and the like have fallen in the "vintage chic" category.

For every day business workshop use, probably not so much. Really they are only designed to hold paperwork.

Have to say though IKEA stuff really is crap these days, and it only gets more expensive every year. It costs almost as much as proper furniture used to cost before IKEA came along. I'll only buy IKEA stuff now if it's actually made of wood. Nobody will be passing IKEA stuff to their children... mostly because it collapses if you try to move it.

Agreed. I have some Ikea items from 20 years ago that are still going strong, but the newer stuff definitely seems to be "value engineered" and only just strong enough to hold itself together.

Ive got a couple of then and while they are a bit flimsy they are fine for my useage, the drawer runners do benefit from a good coating of grease though.

if you do get then, I was impressed with how they assemble as I think the only fastenings used in construction are to hold the wheels and handles in place

And therein is probably the reason there so flimsy.
