Help please with capacitor choice for DVD player

Hiya, I know a few people on here dabble in electronics, so I hope you can help me choose the correct capacitor.
My Panasonic dvd/surround sound system has refused to start properly after being unplugged for a couple of days for decorating. The problem is common on the internet but finding a cause is harder although a couple of people say to change a certain capacitor on the power supply board. This one -

Its approx 7 mm long and 6 mm diameter, black with a white or grey stripe. It says 10 uf, 50 v, 105 degree cap with 949 and made by Elna.

So my question, what do I need? When I look there is different types of capacitor, they all look the same to me!

You need a 10uF 50v Radial Electrolytic capacitor.

I have repaired 20 or 30 Panasonic DVD/VHS combos which also suffer from one or two electrolytics going down. It's obvious which ones are faulty because they split the end of the can open. Has this happened? I use "Low ESR" caps as replacements (Low Equivalent Series Resistance.")

A domed head is a good indication that the electrolyte has been gassing. It should be a flat disc.

No, nothing appears to be 'blown'.

Sounds more likely to be an issue with the laser head.

If you change that there capacitor, remember they have to be fitted correct polarity.

There will be a plus symbol on the pcb which you can use to insert the capacitor the right way round.

Thanks for the replies. If it was just a dvd, I wouldn't bother, but as its a surround sound system, I'm loathed to chuck it!

As above power related i always look for a Low ESR capacitor. The higher the tolerance and temperature rating helps to prolong life as well.
Have you looked at rapid in Colchester they have a trade counter.

Fitted new cap today and all working again!

Thanks for the replies and advice, especially @Seadog as I bought some of the caps he suggested above.

Now to see how long it lasts, another 8 years I hope!

Great. It's always satisfying, at least it is to me, to find a simple fix like that. How many thousands or millions of tons of electronics is binned for want of an easy fix? Well done
