But by the time you have cranked the handles to make one spanner you'll hae a coupon like a weel skelped erse. Much easier pushing a button and being fascinated as your wonder mill churns out 20 of them for you to sell to friends and family

I've been meaning to get around to fitting a very good Pantera full touring fairing for the last two years, but you know how things go. In the meantime, faced with another winter on the XJ900 I decided to do a couple of things to improve the standard fittings.
First I fitted a pair of hand guards, just cheap Hong Kong Specials, but they're surprisingly robust and seem to do the job. Only had them on a week, and the weather's not been very cold so far but they do make a difference.
Today I set to with a handsaw and a length of polycarbonate sheet about 11" wide and 2mm thick. Just cut a 16" section from it and formed that over the existing screen, using the top four bolts as securing points. It projects about 4 or 5 inches above the existing edge and should be enough to deflect the wind over the top of my helmet.
I'll fit some edge trim when I get some - tidy it up slightly and edge trim also helps tame the airflow off the edge of the screen, reducing buffeting, if any. If necessary, I can also fit another deflector at the top, a laminar lip type of thing, now available cheaply from aliexpress for about $18.

Just got to make sure the screen edge isn't going to cut my head off in the event of a shunt, if that's a problem I can have at it with a hot air gun and attempt to flare it up slightly. I haven't done that yet, as I'm reluctant to probably wreck my screen if I don't need to. I won't be out on the bike until Thursday, so I'll see what it's like then.

Pantera, now that is a blast from the past. Brings back mixed memories but mostly of what happens if you ride your bike into a 2ft deep flood at 50MPH.

This must have been almost 30 years ago.

Pantera were the best of the Vetter copiers and improved on the design in some useful ways.
There were other copiers that were just horrendous.

First day trial of the hand guards and extended windscreen on the XJ9. A qualified success, certainly on the hands, and the screen definitely fires the main airstream over my head, but there's still a fair amount of turbulence behind it. I strongly suspect the mirror heads, but I'll first try a diy deflector and /or air entry at the base. It will be creating a partial vacuum behind it, which is sucking in the turbulent air from the wake of the mirror heads and that's hitting my helmet.
The turbulence isn't strong enough to cause me any physical discomfort, it's just a bit noisy. No head shaking at all.
At 90mph it's definitely much more tolerable in the chill (6degC ambient) than before.

I made a start to designing the new control panel for the lathe.
Good thing is I have most of the parts already drawn up, things such as buttons and MPG etc do not even need altered but other things like the housing, keyboard panel etc need altered for the new shape/sizes but that is still time saving compared to redrawing from scratch.

As I said I have most of the basics so altering things is a lot quicker. The one for the lathe will be very similar to the one I did for the Chiron except I am not sure whether I will go steel (like the Chiron) or Aluminium.
I may try and hinge the front panel on this one though as it would make life much easier if anything needs done inside.

Havent made them yet but got 98% of the steel cut to make a display rack, some legs and feet for pre made display racks and then some cross members, for the inside of my dads van to allow storage off some different racks in the dead space near the roof.
