What kind of welding will fix this latch?

Hi all,
I have a set of sliding workshop doors from an old industrial building, securing my yard.

Someone has broken one of the latch handles. I think it is cast iron. Any idea how to repair this please?

Those are your two best options above really. Braze or remake.

That reminds me, years ago I bought a small oxy type kit from halfords, wouldn't have been more than £50 back then, sure the bottles were small but they would have probably lasted long enough to do small jobs like this. I've never been able to find replacement bottles, still have the empty ones, will take/post a picture if anyone is interested.

It looks thin enough to braze with Mapp gas if you have a good plumbing torch.

Cut the remainder off and cut a vertical slot in the end of the rod with a hacksaw to take another piece of flat bar or even the original if you don't mind it shorter. Drill and put a 6mm bolt through.

I gave something similar away because you can't get the oxygen bottles in that fitting here anymore [although you could make an adaptor I suppose].

Oxy-turbo kit is what I use now, similar to this but my oxy connector has a contents gauge on it

Set it up in a corner pocket made of bricks and MAPP gas it.

I usually weld loads of cast iron parts with copper wire, 95% of the time it helds pretty well depending on the cast...

Just as you would TIG weld mig steel but you use oxigen free coper wire... I buy bits of electrical cable from local recicling centre and strip the wire in 1m lenghts then use on DC at about 100 A wilst feeding the coper rod as you would do normal mild steel. Works really well... The same wire i use when i weld coper alambics/distillers for alcohool...
Its not quite like brazing, the coper dilutes the cast iron and puddles really well and most impurities flow on surface and forms riples just like on normal steel. Dress up accordingly...
