Trailer wheel bearings

Got an old trailer.
Sorting out wheel bearings etc.
Was dismantled ages ago.
Where does the plastic bit go?

Also the split pin doesn't seem to fit properly. As if it is split the wrong way. Wants to sit in the castellated nut one way but then can't bend the way it should be.

It's fitting as was intended. The leg folds over the top.

I've seen split pins fitted that way, shorten the lower leg and bend the upper back over the end of the axle.

yep stops the risk of the revolving hub dragging the pin

I thought it was supposed to wrap around the shaft - one leg each way.

What about the plastic bit? I assume some sort of shield to keep grease in or water out? There is an external cap to go over it all.

As above Re, the split pin, I have never been a fan of bending split pins like this, I always if possible to cut off the legs leaving enough length to just open the legs slightly. No danger of them coming out and much easier to remove and even replace if a new one is not available,

The splitpins are pretty chunky and will only fit into a castellated nut one way, look at size of the pin head. They take a bit of bending, and if you want to put around nut run risk of catching on grease cap.
Plastic looks like the seal....

Don't put the eye of the split pin into the nut, let it sit proud. Then you can have the pin sitting the other way & bend the legs around the sides of the nut, as they should. I've taken apart many hubs & I've yet to see one with the pin bent over the end of the axle.

Still a job only works right if you have bits left over at the end

Pin bent over axle been on the go for hunners of years.....

Is there a seal over the bearing? Is there a rear seal? Think you mentioned an outer grease cap....if so, seems no particular reason for plasticky bit to be there.
Unless it's a spacer that goes behind.....

My trailer has the split pins over the end of the axle. Never been a problem, the dust cover hides them

Once the nut and split pin are in place it's usually just a case of fitting a steel end cap filled with grease to keep out dirt and water, some of the modern caps are plastic but not of that shape.

The end cap should have a small central hole that will allow excess grease to escape when pressed on, a tell tale that the void is grease packed.

I have seen a plastic component like that during my times of making and repairing trailers but can't just recall where, I did think for a moment it was the throwaway shaft thread protector that I think Towsure units used to have but looks a bit too well built for that.

No idea but I have to pull another one off anyway.
Bearings fine damn studs were sheared on all the hubs.

Although not always the correct answer, you will be able to tell if the plastic piece is required and where it fits from the other hubs.
It may just be a rogue part that got mixed into the parts whilst it was all apart. As you say it was dismantled ages ago.

Possibly not what you want to hear now it's all back together but is the plastic bit supposed to protect the oil-seal on the back of the hub? There's usually something to act as a bit of a shield for that seal whether it's metal or plastic. The ones I've messed with have all been just a disc rather than the top-hat shape you've got but I don't know what shape the stub axle is back there.
