My new Graduate lathe is in very good shape for its age - being a 1966 model that has lived 22 years in a school then taken early retirement in the 80s, but it’s looking scrappy and there are a few areas I want to address.
Firstly the paint is mainly complete but chipped and covered in what looks like glue but I think stems from another problem.
The spindle bearings were replaced and I don’t think it’s been done quite right as I decided to rev the machine to max speed (2000rpm) and it showered me and the floor with grease. The bowl turning end bearing cap leaked grease badly. I think sawdust has clung to the grease and become plasticky over time, causing the mess on the lamp and paintwork.
The bed is rusty and could do with brightening up - an easy job, just break out the scotchbrite pads.
The chisel rack could do with some fettling to make it work better (Harrison supplied wooden racks to sit under the bed as an optional extra)
I also want to make a lamp stand boring attachment and possibly a sanding table for the end as I have a 14” faceplate for it, as well as a tool rest for metal spinning.
I have begun with sanding, filling and painting the spindle cap, polishing the bedways and making a start on the lamp.
